과학소설(SF)을 통해 배우는 서사적 추진력

Learning Narrative Drive through Science Fiction - Designing and Review of the SF-related courses

본 논문은 과학소설을 대상으로 하는 교양교과목을 설계하는 데 있어서 과학소설이 가진 서사적인 특징과 그 특징으로 있을 수 있는 효과에 관해 논의하고 교과목 설계의 방향성을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 과학소설이 다른 판타지 장르와 다른 점은 대안세계를 그리면서도 현실적인 인식을 기반으로 한다는 것이며 이러한 특성은 인문학과 과학을 연결하는 접점인 동시에 교육적인 활용에도 쓰일 수 있다. 과학소설과 관련된 과목이 점점 늘어나고 있는 지금 본 논문은 과학소설의 설계의 방향과 가능성에 대해 생각해 보았다. 먼저 과학소설의 서사가 가진 특성, 서사적 추진력에 대해 이론적으로 고찰하고 이런 서사적 특징이 교육적으로 어떻게 이용될 수 있는지에 대해 과학소설의 추론 기능, 논리적 사고, STEAM 교육에서의 활용 면에서 찾아보았다. 이어서 실제 우리나라에 개설된 과학소설 대상 교과목에 대한 조사와 교과목의 특성을 살펴보았고, 영미원 국가에서 개설된 과학소설 관련과목들의 유형과 특성 역시 살펴보았다. 마지막으로 과학소설 관련 교과목이 향후 어떤 점을 수용하여 개설될 수 있을 지에 대해 제안하였다.

This paper discusses the narrative drive of science fiction and its effects and presents the direction of course design using science fiction. What makes science fiction different from other fantasy genres is that it depicts an alternative world, but is based on realistic and scientific assumptions. In this sense, science fiction has the potential to operate as a link between the humanities and science. As SF-related subjects are on the rise in Korea, this paper researches the possibility and design of SF-related subjects. Above all, it investigates the characteristics of science fiction and its narrative features that can be used educationally in terms of its reasoning, its logical thinking, and its possibility as the tool for STEAM education. In addition, this paper also researches the SF-related courses that are open in our country, and compares them with similar courses in the UK and the USA. Finally, it makes several suggestions for SF-related courses in the present and future.
