워킹맘의 자녀양육 경험에 관한 내러티브 탐구

Narrative Inquiry on the Working-Mom’s Parenting Experiences: Focusing on the Experiences of Child Counseling during School Age

본 연구는 자녀가 심리적 문제로 인해 아동상담을 받는 과정에서, 워킹맘들이 자녀양육과 관련하여 어떠한 경험을 살아내며, 그 경험이 그들에게 어떠한 의미가 있는지를 이해하고자 하였다. 이를 위해서 직장 경력이 단절되지 않은 전일제 근무자인 여성 중 학령기 자녀의 심리적 어려움으로 인해 아동상담에 참여한 경험이 있는 3인을 선정하여 내러티브 탐구 방법(Clandinin & Connelly, 2000)으로 연구를 진행하였다. 전일제 직장인이자 엄마의 다중역할을 지속해온 연구 참여자 3인은 자녀가 학령기에 진입하면서 보이는 다양한 심리적 문제를 해결하고자 자녀의 아동상담을 경험하게 되었다. 자녀의 상담에 부모로서 함께 참여하면서, 그녀들은 자녀양육에 대한 자신만의 새로운 삶의 이야기들을 형성하게 되었다. 연구 참여자들은 친정 엄마의 양육을 거울삼아 자신만의 양육행동을 형성하면서 주변의 지지체계 안에서 공동양육을 해나가게 되고, 양육의 과정에서 위기와 좌절감을 경험하게 되었다. 자녀의 상담 과정에서 워킹맘으로서의 역할갈등을 숙고하며 자신의 정체성을 새롭게 찾아가고 있었다. 본 연구는 연구자와 참여자 각자가 내러티브 탐구의 과정에서 자신의 삶의 경험에 대해 새로운 이해와 성장을 가질 수 있었다는 점에서, 상담자는 상담에 찾아온 워킹맘 고유의 특성과 상담 동기를 고려하여 그들의 정체성 확립을 지지해야 한다는 점에서, 워킹맘들에게 보다 공식적으로 기업과 지역사회 차원의 상담과 부모교육의 기회가 확대되고 남편과 공동양육이 활성화될 수 있는 제도적 확충이 필요하다는 면에 대한 논의가 되어질 수 있다는 점에서 각각 개인적, 실제적, 사회적 정당성을 지니고 있다.

The purpose of this study was to understand how working mothers can survive their parenting experiences in the process of participating in child counseling for psychological problems of their children, and what the experience means to them. For the study, three female full-time workers with no interruption in work experience were selected to engage in child counseling for the psychological difficulties of their children at school age and conducted a research with the method of narratives (Clandinin & Connelly, 2000). The three research participants who have continued playing multiple roles as full-time office workers and mothers, participated in child counseling to solve various psychological problems they experienced as their children became school age. Participating together as a parent in child counseling, they came to form their own new life stories about parenting. The research participants created a joint child rearing community while building their own child-rearing behavior, mirroring their mother’s child-rearing, and came to experience crisis and frustration in the process of raising their own child. Through this process, they were able to find their new identity while repeatedly juggling between their roles as a working mother. This study has personal, practical, and sociallegitimacy in that each researcher and participant were able to have a new understanding and growth of their life experiences in the course of narratives, and that counselors should support establishing their identity by taking into account the unique characteristics of working mothers that institutional improvement is required to expand the opportunities of parents counselling and education with corporate and community level counselling and and institutional improvement is required to activate parental education and fathers’ involvement in child rearing.
