Multilevel Mediation Analysis Using the Multilevel Structural Equation Modeling: Focusing on the Simulation Study

교육 연구에서는 학교 수준의 처치가 어떠한 메커니즘을 통해 학생의 결과에 영향을 미치는지에 대하여 주요한 관심을 갖는다. 따라서 이 연구에서는 다층 구조방정식모형을 활용하여 2-1-1 구조를 따르는 다층 구조에서 발생하는 매개효과를 분석할 때 자료의 조건에 따라 직·간접효과 추정치의 양호도를 살펴보는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 이를 위하여 급내 상관계수, 집단의 수, 집단 크기와 같은 다층 자료의 조건과 맥락효과의 조건을 고려하여 생성한 모의실험 자료를 활용하였다. 또한, 자료의 조건에 따라 직·간접효과 추정치의 정확성, 효율성, 검정력을 비교하였다. 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 직·간접효과 추정치의 정확성의 경우, 맥락효과의 유무에 따라 영향을 받았으며, 맥락효과의 조건에 따라 편의되는 방향이 다르게 나타났다. 또한, 급내 상관계수, 집단의 수, 집단 크기가 증가할수록 정확성이 향상되는 모습을 보였다. 둘째, 효율성 및 검정력은 맥락효과의 유무에 영향에 받지 않았으며, 급내 상관계수, 집단의 수, 집단 크기가 증가할수록 향상되었다. 이를 토대로 다층 구조에서 발생하는 매개효과를 적절하게 분석하기 위해 적절한 자료 조건을 확인하고, 다층 구조방정식모형의 활용을 제안하였다.

In the educational research, it is the main concern how the school-level treatment has an effect on the students’ outcome. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the quality of the direct and indirect estimates by data conditions when analyzing the mediation effect in the 2-1-1 multilevel structure using the multilevel structural equation modeling. Based on this point, the simulation data was generated by considering the contextual effect conditions and the multilevel data conditions such as ICC, the number of groups, and group size. And this study compared the accuracy, efficiency, and power of the direct and indirect estimates by data conditions. The results of this study were as follows. First, the accuracy of the direct and indirect estimates was affected by contextual effect, so the biased directions of the direct and indirect estimates were different by contextual effect conditions. Also the accuracy of the direct and indirect estimates improved as ICC, the number of groups and group size increased. Second, the efficiency and power of the direct and indirect estimates were not affected by contextual effect conditions but were better as ICC, the number of groups and group size increased in number. Based on these results, this study confirmed the appropriate data conditions to properly analyze the mediation effect in the multilevel structure and suggested to use the multilevel structural equation modeling.
