교양교육과 전공교육의 균형과 수렴에 관해

Balance, Convergence and Integration of General Education and Major Education

한국의 대학사회에서 교양교육은 현실적으로 그 본래의 교육적 의의를 거의 살리지 못하고 있는 상태다. 대학교육이 ‘특화된 전문직업교육’, 즉 전공교육에 치우친 탓인데, 이제 한국의 지식사회도 산업화에 매진하던 시대와 달리 진정한 의미에서의 교양교육, 즉 ‘일반적 보편지성교육’이 한층 더 크게 요구되는 상황으로 변모했다면, 교양교육의 강화, 심화를 위해 그에 걸맞는 변혁을 꾀해야 한다. ‘하면 좋지만, 안 해도 그만’이라는 교양교육에 대한 피상적 편견을 버리고 기초학문분야의 연구 성과가 전공 구분과 무관하게 모든 학생들에게 교육되도록 교육과정과 교육구조를 변모시켜야 한다. 교육과정을 바꿔 기초학문분야에서는 ‘전공과목’과 ‘교양과목’이 균형을 잡고 나아가서는 점차 수렴되다가 급기야는 그 구별을 철폐해야 한다. 그리고 아주 근원적으로는 기초학문분야의 학업을 기초로 하고 응용학문분야의 학업은 그 위에서 이루어지도록 교육구조가 혁신되어야 한다. 그래서 궁극적으로 교육과 연구가 유기적으로 통합되는 구조가 정착되어야 한다. 한국의 대학이 세계적인 수준으로 격상되기 위해서는 꼭 필요한 개혁이다.

In Korean universities the educational idea of general education is not realized in its original meaning. It s because the major education, mainly the vocational education in special area, has been emphasized. But the society of knowledge has been changed so that the general education in its original meaning is demanded more than ever, not as in the age of industrialization. To cope with the new intellectual geography the university education has to be changed accordingly so that the general education can be deepened and enhanced. Concerning the curriculum the reform has to aim at balance, convergence and eventually integration of general education and major education. Concerning the educational structure of the university, the reform has to aim at a kind of “stratification” so that the study in disciplines of applied science (vocational study) has to be carried out on the foundation of the study in those of pure sciences. In that way the research and education must be integrated organically.
