The Summer Reading Programs for Incoming Freshmen Class at Selected Universities in the United States

미국의 각 대학들은 신입생을 위해 다양한 하계 징검다리 프로그램(Summer Bridge Program)을 마련해 놓고 있다. 진학할 대학을 결정한 학생들은 6월 초에서 9월 초까지의 기간 동안 입학 예정인 대학에서 제공하는 하기 계절학기(Summer School Sessions), 신입생 사전 오리엔테이션 프로그램(Pre-Orientation Programs for Freshmen), 그리고 신입생 오리엔테이션(Freshmen Orientation Programs) 등의 다양한 입학 전 교육기회를 가지게 된다. 사전 오리엔테이션 프로그램을 통해 신입생들은 지역사회 봉사를 포함하여 학교 안팎에서 이루어지는 다양한 프로그램에 참여하여 신입생 또래 그룹과 사귈 수 있는 기회를 얻게 되며, 교수진과 상급생 멘토들로부터 대학생활에 관한 전반적인 지도를 받게 된다. 이 논문의 목적은 미국대학의 신입생을 위한 하계 징검다리 프로그램 중에서 비교적 다양하고, 포괄적인 입학 전 교육프로그램을 제공하고 있는 유수 대학의 사례를 분석하여 한국 대학에서 입학 전 교육프로그램을 개발, 실행하는 데에 참고 할 수 있는 시사점을 추출하는데 있다. 이 연구에 포함된 사례는 Cornell, Duke, 그리고 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 대학이다. 이 논문에서는 신입생을 위한 입학 전 여름 명저 독서프로그램과 이에 관련된 제반 조직 및 인적 자원 등을 소개할 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to introduce the summer reading programs for incoming freshmen class at Cornell, Duke, and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I will examine the book selection processes, contents of the selected books, and personnels who are involved in the programs. The summer reading programs provide a set of comprehensive resources about the issues that were addressed in each of the selected books including the guidelines for discussion leaders, discussion questions, Websites and data sources, and list of previous studies and reference materials on the topics. I discuss the implications of the programs in developing the winter bridge programs for incoming freshmen students in Korean universities.
