Theodore Beza’s Understanding of Reason and Faith as a Measure of Ethical Judgement

본 논문은 베자의 윤리적 판단의 척도로서 이성과 믿음에 대한 이해를 목적으로 삼는다. 이는 칼빈과 정통주의자의 관계를 규명하는 주요 논제이기 때문이다. 베자의 이성과 믿음에 대한 이해가 이후 정통주의자들의 신학적 사고에 어떤 영향을 끼치게 되는지 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위해서, 우선 종교개혁자들처럼, 인간의 죄성에 대한 베자의 이해에서 출발할 것이다. 하나님의 형상을 지닌 피조물로서의 인간과 아담의 타락으로 인한 죄인으로서의 인간 사이의 갈등을 해결하는 과정에서, 베자가 제한된 이성이지만 어떻게 이성의 자리를 담보하는지를 보여주고자 한다. 둘째, 제한된 이성이 어떻게 윤리적 행동을 결정하는 의지로 나타나는지, 그 과정을 이성과 믿음과의 관계를 통해서 살펴보고자 한다. 마지막으로 이성의 논리적 추론을 위한 객관적 대상으로서의 성경의 신적 권위에 대한 베자의 이해를 서술할 것이다. 이를 근거로 베자가 주지주의적 사유를 우선시하면서도, 성령이 부여하는 확신을 통한 주의주의적 체제를 믿음의 전인적 특성에서 어떻게 논증하는지 보일 것이다. 이로써 베자의 이성에 대한 이해는 칼빈과의 연속성을 지닐 뿐만 아니라 교리적 체계화를 위한 교두보였다는 점을 증명할 것이다.

My paper aims at investigating the relationship between reason and faith in the ethical judgement of Theodore Beza, which is a theme that defines the relationship between Calvin and orthodox Christians. For this purpose, I investigate Beza’s understanding of humanity. Beza started, like the Reformers, from human sinfulness. I look into the conflict between creatures with the image of God and sinners caused by the fall of Adam. I show how he overcame this conflict, and in this process, I explain how he understood the role of reason. Secondly, I research Beza’s voluntarism in the relationship between reason and faith. I examine how reason controls will in order to determine ethical behavior. Finally, I investigate Beza’s intellectualism, and how he understood the authority of the Bible as the touchstone of ethical judgement. I show the holistic-personal character of faith by the assurance of understanding and certainty of the Holy Spirit. In conclusion, I demonstrate that Beza systematically explained this doctrine in continuity with Calvin.
