Toward Hymn Singing in a Meaningful Way: A Study of the Hymn God Moves in a Mysterious Way by William Cowper(1731-1800), Focusing on Theological and Literary Aspects

본 연구는 18세기 영국 복음주의의 대표 시인, 윌리엄 쿠퍼(William Cowper 1731-1800)의 찬송시 <주 하나님 크신 능력>(God Moves in a Mysterious Way)에 대한 신학적, 문학적 분석을 다룬다. 칼빈주의적 신학관을 가진 쿠퍼는 이 찬송시에서 하나님의 절대 주권, 섭리, 지혜와 그 분의 선하시고 자비로우신 속성을 노래하며, 연약하고 불완전한 존재인 성도들은 자기 백성을 끝까지 보존하시는 은혜로우신 하나님에 대한 믿음과 신뢰를 가지고 인생의 고난과 역경을 인내하며 나아가라는 기독교 신앙의 확고한 진리를 심어주고 있다. 이러한 신학적 주제를 가진 이 찬송시는 논리적인 구조 속에 쿠퍼의 뛰어난 수사학적 기법과 위트, 그리고 시의 전체 흐름까지 고려한 민감한 언어 능력까지 어우러져 생생한 시각적 효과를 제공함으로써 독자들에게 확고한 기독교 신앙의 진리를 심어주어 성도들의 신앙을 더욱 더 성장시키고 믿음을 강화시키는 찬송가의 교육적 역할을 명확하게 드러내고 있다. 2006년에『21세기 찬송가』가 발간되었지만, 여전히 우리는 즐겨 부르던 찬송을 선호하여 새로 수록된 찬송가를 제대로 검증하지 못했고, 쿠퍼의<주 하나님 크신 능력>과 같은 이전의 찬송가에 실렸던 주옥같은 찬송시를 다시 부를 수 있는 기회를 잃어버렸다. 본 연구를 통해 찬송가의 가치와 기능을 다시 한번 되새기며 찬송가에 대한 우리의 자세가 적극적으로 변화되어 올바른 찬송 문화를 정립하고 예배 속에 한층 더 의미 있는 찬송 부르기를 향한 우리의 노력이 계속되어야 한다. 그래야만 우리의 소중한 교회음악 유산인 찬송가를 후대에 온전히 물려줄 수 있기 때문이다.

This is a study of the hymn, God Moves in a Mysterious Way by William Cowper(1731-1800). He is a leading hymn writer of the eighteenth-century English Evangelicalism. This paper focuses on the theological and literary analysis of the hymn. Cowper emphasizes the Calvinistic view of God’s absolute sovereignty, providence and wisdom as well as His goodness and mercy. Cowper makes great efforts to instill the firm truth of the Christian faith throughout his hymn. In addition, he exhorts the feeble and imperfect saints to have faith and trust in the gracious God, Who preserves His people to the end, throughout the hardships and adversity of life. Within a logical framework, these valuable theological messages are vividly presented by Cowper’s exquisite rhetoric techniques, wit and his sensitive usage of poetic words. Consequently, the educational role of the hymn to strengthen the believer’s faith is highlighted. Even though『21st Century Hymnal』was published in 2006, we still prefer to sing our favorite hymns. As a result, we have not had a chance to look over the new hymns fully. At the same time, we have lost the opportunity to sing a gem of hymn like God Moves in a Mysterious Way by Cowper. Through this study, our awareness of the values and functions of hymns should be refreshed, consequently changing our attitude toward more meaningful hymn singing in our worship. Only then will we be able to pass down our hymnody as a precious legacy of church music entirely to the future generations.
