타자를 위한 존재로서의 교회 건축과 교회 공공성

The Construction and Public Character of the Church as a Space for the Other

교회는 타자를 위해서 존재한다. 절대적 타자인 하나님과 자기 자신이 아닌 존재인 타자들을 위해 존재하도록 부름을 받았다. 타자를 위한 존재로서의 교회는 자기 과시성이나 자기만족을 지양하고 타자를 환대하고 타자를 위해 개방된 공간을 구성하도록 노력해야 한다. 교회 안팎의 타자들, 즉 일반 시민, 사회적 약자, 장애인, 여성, 죽은 자, 생태계의 보존 등을 배려한 공간 배정과 건축이 필요하다. 일반 시민들을 위해서는 벽을 낮춘 교회 혹은 벽을 허문 교회가 필요하고, 노숙인들과 가출청 소년들을 위한 공간도 추진해야 하고, 장애인들에게는 휠체어로 아무런 거리낌 없이 주차하고, 보행하고, 예배드리고, 친교할 수 있는 공간 구조가 필요하며, 여성들에게는 친교와 봉사를 남성들과 함께 할 수 있도록 친교실과 주방의 배치와 수유실을 따로 갖춘 자모실, 확장된 화장실 등이 필요하고, 생태계의 보존을 위해서는 기후 변화의 시대에 에너지 절약을 최대한 할 수 있는 방향의 건축이나 일반 건물의 공유 등이 필요하며, 죽은 자를 위해서는 납골당의 설치와 무연고자도 납골당을 사용할 수 있도록 개방되어야 한다. 언급된 타자의 목록이나 타자에게 필요한 공간 등은 더 많은 대화를 통해 확장되고 확대되어야 한다. 타자에 대한 배려와 관심은 교회 공간을 통해서 구체화되어야 하며 이러한 교회의 노력은 타자를 향한 교회의 사랑이 공간을 통해 구조화될 때 결실을 맺게 될 것이다.

The church exists for the other. It is called to exist for God, the Absolute Other, and the others who are not themselves a part of the church. As a being for the other, the church should avoid selfishness or self-satisfaction, in order to welcome the other and create an open and safe space for the other. The church needs to work toward allocating and creating space for the others within the church: ordinary citizens, the socially underprivileged, the differently-abled, women, the dead and those grieving them, and the vulnerable nonhumans in an ecosystem. The church should provide homeless people and runaway teens with a welcoming and safe space, and the differently-abled with spacious parking spots. They should work to make the worship space comfortable and friendly with wide corridors for the unhindered movement of wheelchairs, and provide female members with a kitchen directly connected to a community room, a nursing room separated from a breast-feeding room, and more toilets compared to male ones. In the age of climate change, it is necessary to build energy efficient buildings to reduce greenhouse gases. For the dead, the ossuary, which is open to nonmembers, should be installed in and around the church. The mentioned list of the others, or the specified space for the others, should be expanded through more lively discussions. The church space is the show-and-tell of the consideration and concern for the other for whom God’s love is substantiated and materially structured in the world.
