General Education Policy of Universities in Mainland China

General education in colleges and universities in Mainland China has a history of nearly 20 years. This article probes into the objectives and three basic motives to carry out general education in colleges and universities in Mainland China. General education in Mainland China has experienced three stages of pilot exploration, implementation and promotion, and quality management. During the three stages, the content and framework of forms of carrying forward general education are worked out. Measures are taken to promote its extensive development and to improve its quality, such as a combination of parts and whole, the key construction of national general education bases, national general education platforms and resources as well as the annual inspection system of the bases. The purpose is to cultivate generalists and specialists with humanistic spirit.
