In a time of increasing globalization, the ability to access and understand information in English is increasingly important for second language (L2)learners. This is an action research paper with direct implications for classroom teachers. The purpose of this paper is to examine how large numbers(1,000-1,000,000,000) can be taught more effectively to English as a Foreign Language (EFL) university students in South Korea. The paper first explains the rationale behind this study. Then, a lesson plan for teaching large numbers using the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approachis proposed. Next, the results and pedagogical implications of a study implementing the lesson plan with a group of 31 South Korean university students are discussed. Based on the study, the paper concludes that: large numbers in English can and should be effectively taught to South Korean university students using a CLT approach.
