A Study on Exile Poems of Tangju Park Jong

鐺洲 朴琮(1735~1793)은 국내 명승지를 두루 유람하고 기록을 남길 만큼 山水詩書에 대한 癖이 있다. 그의 산수유기는 작품성을 인정받아 연구가 축적된 반면 다른 문학작품에 대한 논의는 전무한 만큼 이에 대한 연구의 필요성이 제기된다. 특히 그는 스승 홍계희의 두 손자가 일으킨 정조 시해 미수 사건에 연루되어 경상도 영해에서 16년간 적거하다가 죽음을 맞이한다. 이 시절 지은 시문은 유배라는 극한 상황임을 염두에 두더라도 박종의 문인적 감성과 역량이 오롯이 발현되어 작품적 성취가 크다. 한편 박종의 문집 간행에 참여하고 서발문을 썼던 이들은 대부분 그가 억울하게 유배되었음에도 원망하거나 탓하지 않은 점을 특기하여 군자적 면모를 고평하였다. 그러나 실제 유배 시절 지은 시문을 면밀히 살펴보면 억울하게 유배된 과정에서 정의감과 억울함의 착종, 유배객의 실존과 회한, 가장으로서의 역할 괴리 등에서 원망하고 탓하는, 인간으로서 지극히 자연스럽고 보편적인 감정을 여과 없이 토로하였다. 박종 문학의 다채로운 면모를 확인할 수 있는 지점이다. 이를 통해 18세기를 살다 간 한 인물의 문학작품을 적실하게 평가함과 동시에 지역적으로 소외된 문인 지식인을 소환하여 한문학의 지평을 확장한다는 의미를 아우르게 될 것이다.

This paper focuses on Park jong’s poems written in the times of exile. Tangju(鐺洲) Park Jong(朴琮, 1735~1793) is well-known for his favor of poetry or writings on landscapes, even he roamed over all the famous scenic sites. Park’s travel journals around landscapes(山水遊記) have been spotted and researches were conducted for quality of the journals, which implies the importance of studies on his other writings. Especially Park was involved in the case of assassination attempt of Jŏngjo by two grand sons of his teacher, Hong Gye-hŭi(洪啓禧). In result, he was exiled to Yŏnghae, Gyeongsang Province, and after 16 years he died. Poetries written in this period are result of Park Jong’s essence of literary sensibility and ability, even under days of banishment. Therefore, these works can be considered as a huge literary achievement. Each personnel who participated in publication of Park Jong’s collection or wrote postscript highly praised his nobility of not showing resentment or blames upon others. However, in fact if we read through his writings carefully, there are humanely general and natural emotions he felt through unjust accusation and banishment. There is entanglement of his justice with frustration, self-awareness as an exile with remorse, and discrepancy between a head of household and an exile, with resentment or blames toward others. This honest responses shows various aspects of Park Jong. Closer study of his exile poems will allow us to appraise literary works of a scholar in 18th century precisely, and give spotlight to someone yet recognized by geographical isolation, thus broaden the horizon of Korean Liteature in Classical Chinese.
