This study aims to give an insight to teachers who use works of literature in teaching reading to undergraduate students in EFL setting by analyzing the case study in which an American novel was used in a “Reading in English” class at a university. For this goal, it examines some of the studies on reading education and especially values the idea that teaching reading should pursue enhancing critical literacy, using literary works. It emphasizes the importance of works of literature as textbooks in reading in English courses from that perspective. Then it evaluates that an American novel, Edith Wharton’s Summer (1917), is an appropriate textbook for a <Reading in English> class in this respect. After presenting weekly teaching contents and various teaching methods used in that class and analyzing students’ responses to the questionnaire about the <Reading in English> class, it proves that teaching a suitable work of literature to undergraduate students has some good effects in reading in English, enhancing students’ critical literacy.
