The Study on Bank Characteristics affecting Loan Supply

본 연구는 공통적으로 은행권에 영향을 미치는 금융정책에도 불구하고, 대출공급측면에서 차별성을 보이는 원인으로 은행의 특성요인 차이에 주목하였다. 특히, 대출의사결정이 은행의 특성요인을 토대로 나타난다는 Sufian(2009)의 주장이후 최근 은행의 특성요인을 중심으로 대출공급 변화를 파악하려는 연구시도가 증가하고 있다. 이로써, 본 연구는 국내 은행의 대출공급 변화의 영향요인을 특성변수를 중심으로 파악하고자 한다. 본 연구에서 확인한 주요결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 대출사업종류와 상관없이 은행권 대출공급 변화에 유의한 영향을 미치는 특성요인은 자본확충 수준이며, 자본확충 요구가 강할수록 대출공급이 위축되었다. 둘째, 유동성 수준은 은행권 전체대출의 공급 변화에 부(-)의 영향을 미쳤다. 셋째, 비이자수익비중의 증가는 은행권 전체 대출의 공급을 늘렸다. 넷째, 수익성 감소는 중소기업 대출공급을 늘리는 요인으로 작용하였다. 다섯째, 순고정이하여신비율의 증가는 주택담보대출 공급감소를 유도하였다. 결론적으로 은행권 대출공급을 늘리기 위해서는 자본확충에 대한 요구가 완화될 필요가 있다. 아울러, 중소기업대출 증가를 위해서는 은행들의 높은 수준의 위험프리미엄이 필요하다.

This study focuses on the bank characteristics as the main reason why loan supply is different per bank although financial policy of government is identical to all banks. Especially, many studies are trying to confirm the effect of bank characteristics on loan supply after the argument of Sufian (2009) that lending decision is based on bank characteristics. Accordingly, this study examines the effect of bank characteristics on the change of loan supply. Main results are as follows. First, significant factor among bank characteristics is capital adequacy level regardless of loan business. The stronger requirement of capital adequacy is, the more loan supply is decreased. Second, liquidity negatively affects total loan supply of banks. Third, the increase of portion of non-interest revenue leads to increasing loan supply. Forth, lowering profitability results in increasing small and medium sized enterprise (SME) loan. Fifth, high net non-performing loan ratio is related with the decrease of housing loan supply. As a conclusion, requirement on capital adequacy should be alleviated to make loan supply increased. Besides, high risk premium is required to make SME loan mounted up.
