호서 지명고(湖西 地名攷) - 상징 지명의 의미와 영역 정체성 -

Meanings and Territorial Identities on the Symbolic Toponym Hoseo

본 연구의 목적은 현재 충청도의 별칭으로 사용되고 있는 ‘호서(湖西)’라는 지명의 명명 및 의미 구성의 과정과 기능들을 분석하고, ‘호서’의 지명 영역과 변천, 그리고 그 이름에 담긴 영역 정체성을 분석하는 것이다. 첫째, ‘호 서 지명의 의미 구성’과 관련하여 자크 라캉의 상상계, 상징계, 실재계 개념을 확장시켜 ‘호서’라는 이름이 상상 지명에서 상징 지명으로 질적인 변화를 경험하는 과정을 분석하였다. 둘째, ‘호서 지명의 영역 정체성’에서는 행정 지명 ‘호서’가 가리키는 구체적인 지명 영역과 그 변천 과정을 확인한 후, 상징 지명 ‘호서’가 함축하고 있는 영역 정체성을 문헌 중심으로 조사하였다. 결국 ‘호서’라는 이름은 16세기 전반 ‘호남(湖南)’을 모방하여 명명한 상상 지명에서 시작하여 17세기 이후 충청도를 대체하는 행정 지명으로 쓰이고, 18세기 이후부터는 영역 정체성을 재현하는 상징 지명으로 진화하였다. 그러나 1896년 지명 영역의 분할로 인하여 상징 지명으로서의 물질적 기초가 분열되면서 쇠퇴의 길을 걷게 되는데, 일제 강점기와 현대를 거치면서 ‘호서’라는 이름은 상징 지명으로서의 기능이 크게 위축되었고, 젊은 세대의 지명 인식과 기억으로부터 점차 멀어져 가고 있다.

This article examines the process of naming and constructing meaning on the symbolic toponym Hoseo(湖西) which is another name of Chungcheong-do Province (忠淸道), and its functions as well as the changes of toponymic territory and territorial identities on it. In the first chapter related to ‘the constructing meanings of Hoseo’, I explore the concrete process of the name Hoseowhich is to transform qualitatively the imaginary toponym into the symbolic one, extending the three Lacanian concepts, the Imaginary, the Symbolic, and the Real. In the second chapter based upon ‘the territorial identities of Hoseo’, focusing on the literature review, I examine not only the toponymic territory which the name Hoseo as an administrative toponym denoted, and its change since the late Joseon Dynasty, but also the territorial identities which the name Hoseo as a symbolic toponym connoted. In brief, the imaginary toponym Hoseo had started naming imitatively after the name Honam (湖南) in the early 16th century, and it has been used as an administrative toponym replacing the name Chungcheong-do ever since the late 17th century. Eventually it had been evolved as a symbolic toponym representing the territorial identity of the people of Chungcheong-do Province. Yet, soon after that the administrative district of Chungcheong-do has been officially divided into two parts, Chungcheongbuk-do and Chucheongnam-do in 1896, the physical basis of the symbolic name Hoseo was also split up as well as continued to decline. As a result, from the Japanese colonial era up to the present, the symbolic function of the name Hoseo has been noticeably weakened, while it has been gradually fading from their memory and awareness of the young generation.
