보호수를 활용한 ‘나무 순례길’ 개발

A Suggestion for the Development of ‘Tree Pilgrimage Way’ Using the Protected Trees in Yeoju-si, Gyeonggi Province

보호수는 생태적 가치와 더불어 인문학적 요소를 풍부하게 내재한다. 여주시의 경우 73주의 보호수를 보유하고 있는데, 거의 모든 지자체의 상황처럼 지정만 되었을 뿐 이를 활용하여 문화상품으로 개발하려는 노력은 다소 부족하다. 본 논문은 여주시 전역에 산재한 보호수를 연결하여 ‘나무 순례길’ 개발을 제언코자 하는데, 이는 궁극적으로 전국에 산재한 보호수를 적극적으로 활용함으로써 문화콘텐츠 개발의 기초적인 토대를 마련하는 데 있다. 이런 목적을 수행하기 위해 먼저 보호수에 관한 선행연구를 통해 본 연구의 당위성을 제시할 것이며, 이후 인문학적 문화유산으로서 보호수의 가치를 검토한 후 걷기를 순례로 인식하는 것이 가능한지 이론적 타당성을 검증함으로써 ‘나무 순례길’의 정체성을 정립할 것이다. 이를 바탕으로 최종적으로는 여주시 소재 보호수를 활용하여 ‘나무 순례길’ 개발 방안을 구체화할 것이다. 문화콘텐츠로서 길이 그 가치를 오랫동안 유지하기 위해서는 자연과 같은 생태적 요소와 더불어 다른 어떤 요소, 예를 들어 역사나 전설과 같은 인문학적 요소 등을 적극적으로 고려할 필요가 있다.

Protected trees embrace considerable humanistic factors along with ecological values. In case of Yeoju, seventy three protected trees are dotted around the city. However, just like other counties or cities, its efforts to promote and commercialize those trees of long-standing is somewhat insufficient. In this regard, this study will suggest to develop ‘tree pilgrimage way’ by connecting the protected trees scattered in Yeoju, which is intended to provide a ground for the development of cultural contents within the area. To achieve this aim, this study will priorly look into previous researches and establish the identity of tree pilgrimage way by validifying whether it is possible to recognize ‘walking’ as pilgrimage after checking the humanistic value of protected trees as a cultural heritage. Finally, the specific development of ‘tree pilgrimage way’ will be suggested. It is necessary to actively facilitate literary elements such as local legends or history as well as natural resources in order to maintain the value of way as a cultural property.
