A Study on the Book Culture Space in Itaewon and Trans-Identity

이태원은 예전부터 독특한 다문화 특성을 지니고 있었다. 그러다 2000년대 후반에 들어오면서 이문화를 직접 향유하고자 하는 국내의 다양한 예술가, 젊은이들까지 모여들었다. 이태원은 특유의 다문화, 이종문화에 예술, 청년 문화가 아우러지면서 다양한 문화 해방구 역할을 톡톡히 해내고 있다. 여기에 책문화공간까지 덧붙여지고 있다. 이태원 초기 미군이 판 중고서적을 전문적으로 취급했던 외서 전문 서점에서부터 이태원 특유의 문화를 표방하는 사랑방 같은 동네 문화 서점까지 이태원이 가진 특징을 단적으로 드러내주는 공간들이 생겨난 것이다. 블루스퀘어의 ‘북파크서점’과 같은 대형서점도 있지만 주변 문화까지 아우르며 특유의 문화 특성과 어우러져 특색 있는 동네 책방의 개점을 불러왔다. 독립출판 전문 서점 ‘스토리지북앤필름’부터 영화 관련 책들이 많은 ‘별책부록’, 문학 중심 독립서점 ‘고요서사’, 사랑방 역할을 하고 있는 ‘책방 온지곤지’ 등이 속속 들어섰다. 외서 중고서점 ‘포린북스토어(Foreign Bookstore)’는 ‘2015 서울 미래유산’으로 지정되기도 했다. 성 소수자들을 위한 퀴어 서점인 ‘햇빛서점’도 있다. 이러한 책문화공간의 변화는 트랜스아이덴티티(Trans-Identity) 이론으로 해석할 수 있다. 이태원의 책공간이 어떤 역할을 더 수행할 수 있는지, 나아가 작은 책방 개점이 도시 풍경에 어떤 색채를 가져올지 궁금해진다. 본고에서는 이태원에 있는 책문화공간의 공간적 의미를 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위해 첫째, 용산 지역을 오랜 역사의 부침을 겪으며 형성된 물리적 공간으로, 둘째, 역사적 특성에서 비롯되어 발전된 문화적 공간으로 해석하였다.

Itaewon is an area in Seoul’s Yongsan district, and it has long developed multicultural aspects. Since the late 2000s, artists and the youth started to form a community. The youth culture added to Itaewon’s unique multicultural and intercultural aspect turn the area into an outlet of freedom for diverse cultures. Recently, a new space of book culture appeared. In the early era of its development, there was a bookstore exclusively dealing with foreign books, mainly using the used books sold by the U.S. soldiers stationed in Korea. Then bookstores serving as community centers started to appear, showing the unique characteristics of Itaewon. While there is a huge one like Bookpark Bookstore at the Blue Square, there are smaller, more idiosyncratic ones. Many ‘village bookstores’ opened one after another in the Itaewon area. Storage Book & Film exclusively sells books by independent publishers. Byeolcheck Bookstore focuses on cinema-related books. Goyo Bookshop’s passion is literature. Bookstore OnzieGonzie is serving as a community place. FOREIGN BOOK STORE may be the senior of the group, selling used foreign books. It was included in the 2015 Seoul Future Heritage List. Then there is Sunny Books, a bookstore for LGBTQ. The changes in the book culture space in Itaewon are related to the theories of trans-identity and transversing. It will be exciting to see what roles the new space is further to play in the future. This essay will look into the meaning of Itaewon’s book culture space from a spatial perspective. The essay considers Yongsan district where Itaewon belongs first as a physical space created through the vicissitudes in history, and second as a cultural space developed from such historical characteristics.
