Hollywood B movie and the ‘Technical Others’ during the 1940s and 1950s: Movies with ‘Frankenstein’ theme

지금까지 ‘프랑켄슈타인’에 관한 학술적 논의는 원작 소설을 중심으로 활발히 다뤄져왔다. 그러나 다양한 매체로 확대 재생산되어 온 프랑켄슈타인 관련 문화콘텐츠에 관한 연구는 크게 주목받지 못한 형편이다. 영화는 프랑켄슈타인 소재를 가장 빈번하게 수용해온 매체이며, 당대 사회의 분위기와 대중의 욕망을 매우 순발력 있게 포착해 왔다. 이에 착안해 본고는 당대에 대중적인 인기를 끈 프랑켄슈타인 B무비를 대상으로 스토리텔링 방식에 내재된 반영론적 의미를 검토해 보고자 한다. 특히 이 글은 제2차 세계대전 참전과 매카시즘 열풍 등 1940-1950년대 미국의 사회사적 사건들이 영화 내 서사맥락 안에 어떤 형태로 반영되어 있는지를 살피고자 한다. 분석 결과 프랑켄슈타인 캐릭터에는 당대 사회 대중의 불안 심리를 반영하는 타자의 형상이 구체적으로 나타났다. 한편 프랑켄슈타인이 사회적 욕망의 결과이자 불안의 원인으로 묘사되는 바, ‘기술적 타자’에 대한 양가적 관점을 읽어낼 수 있었다. 궁극적으로는 인간의 생명을 수단화하는 기술 숭배자에 대한 저항이 여러 갈래로 성격화되고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통해 상대적으로 조명 받지 못한 프랑켄슈타인 캐릭터와 B무비에 대한 반영론적 연구가 활성화되길 기대한다.

Until now, scholarly discussions about ‘Frankenstein’ have been dealt fully according to the original novel. However, currently the research on cultural contents of Frankenstein, that has been expanded and reproduced in various media, is still lacking. Among the medias, the film has been the media that most actively accepted the contents of Frankenstein, and it has a tendency to reflect the mood of society and the public’s desire of the day in an instant and a direct manner. In this regard, I would like to examine the storytelling aspect of Frankenstein B movie, which has become popular in the present day. In particular, the United States of the 1940s and 50s was a period that underwent some significant social events like World War II and quite a few significant changes in the movie industry environment. As a result of the analysis, Frankenstein character showed the shape of the other person reflecting the anxiety of the social masses of the present day. On the other hand, in the process of describing Frankenstein as the cause of social desire and anxiety, we were able to grasp the ambivalent view of ‘technical others’. Ultimately, it was confirmed that the resistance to the techno-worshiper who uses human life as an instrumental means is manifested in a different way. Through this research, I hope that research on the character which was relatively not in the spotlight, Frankenstein, and the ‘B movie’ gets revitalized.
