Restoring the Writer’s Birthplace as a Representation

작가의 생가는 지역의 가장 강력한 관광자원 중 하나로서 작가의 창의적인 작품의 탄생에 중심적인 영향력을 행사하는 것으로 가정된다. 관광객들은 생가를 방문하는 가운데 작가가 느꼈을지도 모르는 유사한 영감을 얻을 수 있기를 희망하거나 적어도 창작과 이런 공간 간의 관련성에 대한 감흥의 순간을 공유할 수 있기를 희망한다. 그런 의미에서 작가의 생가는 지역의 정체성 확립, 지역의 이미지 제고, 지역경제의 활성화 측면에서 유의미한 관계가 있는 것으로 받아들여져 각 지역에서는 파괴되거나 소실되어버린 생가의 복원에 적극적으로 개입하여 왔다. 하지만 복원된 생가 대부분은 과거의 원형 상태를 그대로 재생산하는 재건축에 목적을 둠으로써 작가의 문학세계를 이해하고 상상력의 원천으로 작용하기에는 역부족이었다. 근원적 복원은 불가능하고 재현만이 있을 수 있으므로 생가의 복원은 역사적 진실성에 기초해 작가와 작품 세계의 이해를 가장 잘 도모할 수 있도록 재현되어야 한다. 이에 본 논문은 영국을 대표하는 셰익스피어의 생가 복원과 한국 작가들의 생가 복원 실태를 비교ㆍ분석함으로써 생가 복원이 나아갈 방향을 제시해보고자 한다.

This study is to explore the best ways of how the restoration of the writer’s birthplace should be oriented by comparing and analyzing how Shakespeare’s birthplace and some Korean writers’ birthplaces were restored. The birthplace, or home, of the writer is supposed to be one of the most influential resources in the production of his or her creative works. While visiting the birthplace, tourists hope to experience some similar inspiration the writer might have done, or share the moment of excitement the relationships between the novel or poetry and this place might generate. Since it is assumed that the writer’s birthplace can, in this respect, help establish the cultural identity of the area it is located in, improve its image, and develop its economy, the official and private organizations, including the local government, have actively restored the birthplace which had been partially broken down or completely destructed. But as most of the birthplaces restored in the trend are based on the concept of simple reconstruction, it is hard for the tourists to understand the writer’s literary world and invoke their own imagination through the birthplace. Returning to the original old house is impossible and, after capturing the reality of the writer, representing it is possible. Therefore, the restoration of the writer’s birthplace, at least based on the historical authenticity, should be represented in the direction to enable the visitors to understand the writer and his or her works the most.
