명동 역사 속 문화적 재구성

Cultural Reconstruction of Myoung-dong through Historical Encounter

명동은 역사적으로 대한민국 자본주의를 대표하는 공간으로서, 현재 대한민국 내에서 최고의 지가를 기록할 뿐만 아니라 한국을 방문하는 외국 관광객의 78%가 쇼핑을 위해 찾는 장소로서 서울의 대표적 글로벌 공간 중 하나이다. 일본 제국주의 시대에 타자의 공간으로 형성되어 약 100년 동안 대한민국의 정치, 경제 및 사회 문화적 변화와 함께 해오면서, 특유의 상업 장소로서의 특성을 바탕으로 한국의 문화사적 측면에서 대한민국의 문화적 트랜드를 주도하였다. 그러나 현재 화장품, 식품 및 의류 등 한류 관광객을 위한 ‘쇼핑’ 공간으로 주로 소모되면서, 명동의 역사적 문화적 측면은 거의 언급되고 있지 않는 형편이다. 한양의 남촌 지역이었고 한국의 현대사와 함께 했던 명동은 조선시대의 역사적 흔적이 가득한 북촌 및 서촌과 대비되는 장소적 특성을 지니고 있으며, 특히 명동의 상업 공간적 특성으로 인해 문화콘텐츠 개발을 통한 경제적 잠재력 또한 높다고 할 수 있다. 이에, 본 논문에서는 명동의 공간적 변화와 문화적 변천을 마카오 신사복과 맞춤 양장점들이 즐비했던 패션의 본고장이라 칭하기 시작했던 해방 이후의 명동을 비롯해서, 대한민국 문학과 예술의 중흥기였던 1950-1960년대의 명동, 청년문화의 요람이었던 1970년대의 명동을 거쳐 현재의 글로벌 공간으로서의 명동이라는 다양한 사회문화적 키워드를 중심으로 논의하였다. 이를 통해 명동의 역사 속 문화를 재조명함으로써, 명동의 문화적 자료들을 바탕으로 문화콘텐츠로서의 가치를 높이는 데 기여하고자 한다.

As a space of representing the Capitalism of Korea, Myoung-dong, located in Seoul, has been ranked the most expensive space with the land valuation throughout the country. Since 2010, with the popularity of the Hallyu (Korean Wave), it has been attracting foreign tourists visiting Korea, and the number of visitors is estimated at 1.5 million per day. Myoung-dong, since formed and constructed as a space for others in the colonial period, has been through the political, economical and socio-cultural changes through 100 years of modern Korean history. Currently, overflowed with foreign tourists and named as ‘cosme-road’ - compounded of ‘cosmetics’ and ‘road’ - by Japanese tourists, Myoung-dong has been mainly emphasized as a commercial and shopping place of cosmetics, clothes and souvenirs with many Korean restaurants for tourists. However, there have been also wealth of cultural resources and issues in Myoung-dong, which is usually less recognized by tourists because of lack of information provided by tourism guide books or brochures. Hence the paper will discuss some key cultural issues, following the history of Myoung-dong, seeking the colors of its original or traditional culture. The paper hopes to contribute in developing cultural contents of Myoung-dong, giving inspiration through the discussion.
