디지털 기술 발전과 전자책 진화 단계 연구

A study on Digital Technology Development and E-book Evolution

본 논문은 20세기 말 디지털 기술의 도입 이후 전통적인 종이책 출판이 디지털화되고 전자책 출판으로 진화하는 과정에서 드러난 세 단계에 대해 분석하였다. 첫 번째는 기존 종이책이 디지털로재현되는 단계이다. 텍스트 기반의 무료 전자책 제작 운동이 벌어졌고, 비즈니스 측면에서는 다양한 포맷의 PC기반 전자책 소프트웨어와 전자책 단말기가 출시되었으며 이 단계에서 전자책의 출판의 특징은 도서의 디지털 재현 중심이었다는 점이다. 두 번째는 출판사와 저자들이 전자책 출판을적극적으로 활용하기 시작하는 단계이다. 2007년에서 2010년을 전후하여 모바일 디바이스의 확산, 이퍼브라는 전자책 표준의 출현, 전자책 플랫폼의 활성화, 저작 도구와 유통 도구의 대중화 현상이나타난다. 세 번째는 전자책이 종이책의 재현을 넘어서 새로운 멀티미디어 출판으로 진화하는 단계이다. 전자책과 웹이 융합되는 환경에서 전자책은 새롭게 창작, 개발되는 멀티미디어 콘텐츠로서출판된다. 따라서 개발자, 영상 창작자, 창조적 사용자 등 다양한 행위자들이 전자책 출판에 참여하게 된다. 종이책의 디지털 재현과 복원으로부터 시작한 전자책이 종이책의 형식 자체를 넘어서 디지털 콘텐츠가 지닌 속성과 기능을 선택하면서 기술적 환경에 적응하는 방향으로 진화하고 있다. 비교역사분석과 사례분석 방법을 통해 이루어진 이 연구는 디지털 기술혁신의 변화된 환경에서 출판 생태계가 새롭게 형성되는 과정에서 전자책의 진화가 이루어졌으며 창작ㆍ편집ㆍ디자인ㆍ출판ㆍ유통에 이르는 ‘창작과 출판의 민주화(democratization of publishing and creation)’라는 출판 패러다임의 질적인 변화를 겪고 있음을 분석하였다.

This paper analyzes three steps in the process that traditional publications are digitized and evolves into e-book publishing. In first step, the paper book is digital reproduction. A free text-based e-book making activity was conducted, and on the business side PC-based e-book software and e-book terminals in various formats were released. In second step, Publishers and authors begin to use e-book publishing actively. From 2007 to 2010, the proliferation of mobile devices, the emergence of electronic book standards called e-pubs, the activation of e-book platforms, and the popularization of authoring tools and distribution tools are spreading. In third step, e-books go beyond paper books and evolve into new multimedia publishing. In an environment where e-books and the web are merged, e-books are published as multimedia contents that are newly created and developed. Therefore, various actors such as developers, video creators, and creative users participate in e-book publishing. The e-book that started with the digital reproduction and restoration of the paper book abandons the form of the paper book itself. E-books are evolving to adapting to the technical environment while choosing the attributes and functions of digital contents. Based on ‘comparative and historical research’ and case study method, the research shows that the evolution of e-books was made in the process of the new ecosystem of publishing being formed in the changed environment formed by the technical environment. And the research shows that e-books are undergoing a qualitative change in the publishing paradigm of ‘democratization of publishing and creation’ ranging from creation, editing, design, publishing, and distribution.
