Synesthetic Travel Narrative in India Blog

연우무대의 여행 연극 <인디아 블로그>는 가난한 젊은 연극배우들의 삶과 사랑, 우정 등에 대한 은유요 자화상이요 청춘 고백이다. 관객은 이 공연에서 단순한 배우를 보는 것이 아니라 기억된, 재구성된 ‘존재 너머의 배우’ 즉 낯설고, 기이하고, 고유하고, 거듭나는 그런 존재를 보게 된다. 우리는 배우가 “머무는 존재가 아니라 떠돌면서, 자기 스스로를 변화시키는 존재”임을 뻔히 알면서도 매료되어 실재적-비실재적인 이 가상의 세계에서 미적 향수를 진하게 느끼게 된다. 이 향수 체험에는 배우-연출가-관객의 자아가 긴밀하게 참여한다. 그 자아는 여행(또는 여행 연극)을 통하여 자극을 받고 감동을 받기를 원한다. 여행은 내적 경험으로서 인간을 변화시키기에, 여행 연극은 재현적 미학이 아닌 수행적 미학으로서 존립의 기반이 견고하다. <인디아 블로그>는 여행 서사가 객관적인 미적 이념의 요소로서, 삶과 사랑과 우정에 관한 이야기는 주관적인 미적 이념의 요소로서, 각각 존재하는 방식을 채택한 여행 연극이다. 이 연극은 블로그가 웹 사이트에서 개인의 정체성을 구현하기 위하여 이야기와 사진, 동영상, 사운드, 목소리 등을 공감각적으로 표현하는 특성을 그대로 답습하고 있다. 댓글과 공감 등 공유의 대화 수법을 애드리브를 중시하는 토크콘서트 형식의 일회성 퍼포먼스로 대체할 뿐이다. 이 공연은 실재(배우의 인도 여행담)-비실재(등장인물의 삶과 사랑과 우정에 관한 이야기)의 이층적(zweischichtig) 성격의 존재 방식을 고수하면서 다른 한편으로는 다층적(vielschichtig) 성격의 구성 요소를 적극 활용하고 있다. 공감각적 표현을 위한 주요소는 감성적이고 직관적인 현존으로서의 대사와 노래, 영상, 음향, 소품 등으로 의미 구성을 위한 다양한 층위를 구축함으로써 감성 체험의 유동적인 흐름을 자연스럽게 조성한다. 희곡이라는 시공간의 모방적 세계에 갇혀 일방통행의 몰입을 강요하는 재현적 공간(Representational Space)이 아닌 관객에게 공감각을 느끼게 하는 제시적 공간(Presentational Space)으로 무대 연출하여 현존 감각과 자의식을 일깨우는 수단으로 관객의 지각적 참여를 촉발한 것이다.

Travel Play India Blog of Yeonwoo Stage is based on a synesthetic popular narrative. More specifically, in terms of text, the play symbolizes a travel story, video, and music in a format like a blog, while in terms of context, the play seeks an impromptu interaction with the audience in a synesthetic talk concert format. Such cognitive narrative enables the audience to experience a strong esthetic feeling in a virtual world between the real and the unreal. As a travel changes people through an inner experience, this travel play, which is based on performative esthetics instead of representational esthetics, arouses a sense of presence and a sense of identity of actors and the audience who desire to travel. India Blog adheres to the two-layered structure on the basis of the real (i.e., actors’ travel stories) and the unreal (i.e., characters’ stories about life, love, and friendship) on one hand, but also actively accepts the multi-layered structure on the other hand. In India Blog, the key elements of synesthetic expression (i.e., emotional, intuitive, and realistic line, song, video, sound, prop, etc.) constitute the multiple layers of semantic structure, and form the natural and flexible basis of emotional experience.
