예술의 하이브리드, 트랜스아이텐티티를 말한다

Transidentity in Hybrid of Art: Focused on ‘ORLAN Technobody’

‘행위예술(performance)’은 신체가 예술의 매개체이자 결과물이 되는 대표적 장르이다. 프랑스의행위예술가 오를랑(ORLAN)은 자신의 신체변형 퍼포먼스로 사회구조적 모순을 고발한다. 또한 오를랑의 새로운 몸, 즉 오를랑 테크노바디(Technobody)의 예술세계에 나타난 융복합적 요소는 소재와표현양식 등 여러 측면에서 ‘하이브리드(hybrid)’적 특성을 갖는다. 그녀의 예술세계는 인간의 주체성을 비롯하여, 페미니즘과 첨단기술을 주요 화두로 삼고 있다. 따라서 오를랑의 테크노바디는 신체의매개적 기능을 넘어서는 정체성 담론으로 고찰 가능하다. 본고에서는 정체성 문제를 지속적으로 공론화하는 오를랑의 예술세계를 다음의 세 기준에 의해 분석하고자 한다. 첫째로 사회ㆍ정치적 구조내에 위치하는 ‘주체의 정체성’, 둘째로 사회ㆍ종교적 고정관념으로부터 탈피하려는 ‘성(sex)ㆍ젠더(gender) 정체성’, 마지막으로 현실세계와 가상현실을 오가는 ‘기술적 인간의 정체성’이다. 이러한 정체성 담론을 정치ㆍ사회ㆍ철학적으로 고찰하기 위하여, 본고는 주로 프랑스의 철학자 푸코(M. Foucault)와 이탈리아의 철학자 아감벤(G. Agamben)의 논의를 차용한다. 이와 함께 ‘트랜스아이덴티티(transidentity)’ 개념을 활용하여 오를랑 테크노바디가 보여주는 비정주적 정체성을 규정할 것이다. 우리는 이제 더 이상 기술이 배제된 예술을 논할 수 없다. 더불어 예술의 하이브리드로 바라본정체성 연구가 유의미한 까닭은, 기술과 융합하는 예술이야말로 현대인의 정체성을 (재)정립하려는 욕망의 발현이기 때문이다.

Performance is a representative art which use human body as an artistic tool. This study aims to analyze ORLAN Technobody’s performances that accuse social and structural contradiction through transforming her body such as plastic surgery or game avatar. The convergence in her performances has the characteristics of hybrid. She deals with the problems of subjectivity, feminism, high technology and then takes an approach human identity. Identity discourses relating to her performances can be discussed with three viewpoints. Firstly, the identity of subjectivity in social and political structure is examined. Her opinion in stereotype on the identity of sex and gender is the second research inquiry. Lastly, the identity of tech-human staying in both real space and cyber space is considered. To look into identity discourses in her performances, the word of transidentity will be taken use of for explain nomadic characteristics of human identity. For these issues, M. Foucault’s and G. Agamben’s theories are analytic tools of this article. Consequently, we are able to see that identity is an important thing in hybrid of art in this article. We cannot discuss about art without technology any longer. The reason why this study of identity is meaningful is that convergence of art and technology is a representation of desire to redefine human identity.
