재일코리안 연구에 있어서 1차 자료수집 의의와 향후 방향성

The Importance of the Initial Collection of Materials and Later Research Direction on the Study of Japanese Koreans

본 글은 2014년도 ‘한국바로알리기’ 사업 지원을 받아 재일코리안청년연합회가 실시한 『재일코리안 가정에 잠자고 있는 역사자료 발굴 캠퍼인』 의 자료집 내용ㆍ사업성과ㆍ사업의의와 향후 자료수집과 활용방안에 대하여 고찰하였다. 자료 수집은 2014년도 9월부터 12월까지 이루어졌으며, 총 71점의 사진과 구술을 수집하였다. 수집된 자료는 전전과 전후 일본에서 살아온 재일코리안의 극히 사적인 영역의 구술과 사진자료들이다. 자료는 각각 ①식민지시기 도항과 정주 ②해방직후의 재일코리안 ③민족교육 ④ 조국과 재일코리안 ⑤전후를 살아온 재일코리안의 다섯 항목으로 정리하였다. 이 사업의 의의는 첫째, 역사의 주인공에서 배제ㆍ소외되었던 민중의 다양한 구술과 사진자료를 통해서 법적ㆍ정치적 이슈 중심으로 편중된 사료의 한계를 보완함과 동시에 단일ㆍ단편적으로 고정될 수 있는 코리안 디아스포라 연구를 보다 다양(다양성)하고 세밀(세밀성ㆍ정확성)하게 역사적 사실을 파악할 수 있는 기초자료로써 활용 가능하다는 점이다. 둘째, 재일코리안 내부사회에 긍정적인 효과를 미친다는 점이다. 자료를 제공하는 재일코리안 1세와 2세들은 물론 자료를 제공받은 재일코리안청년연합의 멤버들인 재일코리안 3세에게 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 1차 자료수집 활동은 재일코리안 3ㆍ4세에게 민족에 대한 긍정적 사고전환으로 이어질 가능성이 높으며, 또한 한국사회에는 보다 다양한 측면에서 재일코리안을 이해할 수 있는 자료로서 역할이 기대된다.

This research considers not only the contents, but the results and analysis of the ‘Understanding Korea’ project. This project was financed in 2014 by the Korean government and conducted by KEY (Korean Youth in Japan) to uncover historical materials that have been kept in Japanese Korean households. This thesis also looks into more effective ways of collecting those materials and how they can be applied afterwards. Seventy-one items were gathered, including photographs of pre- and post-war Japanese Koreans and personal oral statements. This collection took place over the period September to December 2014. The materials were organized into five categories: 1. Crossing the sea and settlement during the colonial period; 2. Japanese Koreans after the emancipation; 3. National education; 4. The mother country and Japanese Koreans; and 5. Post-war Japanese Koreans. The project is significant in that it considers materials obtained from people who were excluded from the historical record, which focuses more on legal and political aspects of historical events. Additionally, those materials more fully encompass and explore the history of the Korean diaspora by focusing on personal data. This project has also had a positive social effect on Japanese Korean society. Throughout the project, first and second generation Japanese Koreans have been able to share their histories with each other and withmembers of KEY, providing them with relief at being able to finally reveal parts of their lives that were previously hidden. Even the third generation benefitted by working with seniors to help them reveal their photographs and experiences to the public. This connectedness (or shared experience) can lead to positive change for third and fourth generations regarding their nationality and a sense of belonging. It can also play an important role in helping Japanese Koreans understand their history and place within the home country. Consistently collecting such data provides us with a more in-depth knowledge and understanding of this ethnic minority community in Japan.
