Modernist Art and Film

동시성(simultaneity)은 모더니티를 상징하는 단어이다. 베르그송(Bergson) 은 철학적인 개념으로 ‘동시성’을 설명한다. 편집을 통해 다양한 시간을 표현할수 있는 영화는 동시성을 표현할 수 있는 모델이 되었다. 멜리에스(Meli&#232;s)로부터 시작된 영화의 마술적 시간은 과거, 현재, 미래라는 차원이 인간의 정신속에서 일어나는 현상과 마찬가지로 상호 침투하며 구별이 없어지는 시간이다. 영화가 만드는 이 시간은 베르그송적인 지속의 시간, 동시성의 시간이다. 동시성은 영화의 시간성을 상징하는 단어가 된다. 입체주의(Cubisme), 미래주의(Futurisme) 회화는 2차원의 평면의 회화적 공간에 시간의 개념을 도입하면서 동시성을 표현한다. 입체주의와 미래주의 화가들은 영화로부터 시간을 표현할 수 있는 방법을 알게 된다. 피카소(Picasso)는 영화의 편집 방식으로 형태를 분할하여 재구성한다. 단일 화면에 여러 시점과 시간을 펼쳐 보이면서 ‘동시성’을 표현한다. 들로네(Delauney)는 <에펠탑> 연작을 그리며 영화 카메라의 이동과 같은 움직이는 시점을 표현하며 동시성을 전달했다. 뒤샹(Duchamp)은 복수 시점이 아닌 단일 시점으로 움직임 그자체를 표현하는데 집중했다. 뒤샹의 영향을 받은 미래주의자 발라(Balla)는정지된 시점으로 대상의 움직임을 표현한다. 뒤샹과 발라가 표현한 시간은 영화적인 연속성과 유사하다. 대중의 오락거리에 불과했던 회화라는 고급 예술에 영향을 주고 또 영향을 받으며 제 7의 예술이 되었다.

Simultaneity is the symbolic term of Modernity. The film’s capability of expressing various time through editing made it become a model of contemporary. Bergson explains contemporary in philosophical way. Cubism and Futurism adopt the concept of time to two dimensional flat space to express contemporary. Cubism and Futurism artists acquire the ways to express time from films. Picasso divided arts into fragments and reconstituted them like film editing. Expressing ‘simultaneity’ by unfolding different perspectives and times in a single screen. Delaunay showed movements like motions in movie camera in his series of painting <Eiffel Tower> to express simultaneity. Duchamp focused on expressing movement in a single perspective rather than multiple perspectives. Futurist, Balla, who was influenced by Duchamp, showed object movement in a stationary point. Time expressed by Duchamp and Balla is a lot similar to simultaneity of cinema. Cinema moves away from a mere entertainment by influenced by and to arts and thus became the 7thart.
