이미지 중첩은 한 장소에 대해 시간의 간격을 두고 있는 두 이미지를 겹치는것이다. 특히 도시의 역사적 사건을 지속가능한 기억이 되게 하기 위해서는 이미지 중첩이라는 방법을 통해 과거와 현재라는 시간이 만나게 되면 도시의 새로운 서사가 만들어지고, 현재를 더욱 현재답고 의미 있게 해줄 수 있다. 이를위해 필요한 것은 상상력이며, 변증법적 이미지가 빛을 발하는 것은 상상력을통해서이다. 도시의 정체성을 만들어 낸 역사들이 현재에 의미가 있게 하기 위해서는 과거와 현재가 끊임없이 만나 섬광을 발하며 별자리를 만들어가고 있음을 보여주어야 한다. 1980년 5월의 광주라는 도시에서 일어났던 역사적 사건은 시간이 지날수록 도시의 개발과 함께, 사건을 경험하지 못한 세대의 증가로 인한 무관심으로 그 흔적과 의미가 퇴색되어 가고 있다. 도시의 과거 역사가 오늘의 의미가 되게 하기 위해서 시도해보는 과거와 현재의 중첩을 통해, 우리는 도시 곳곳에 스며있는 기억을 끄집어낼 수 있게 되고 현재와 과거는별개의 것이 아니라 하나로 이어져 있음을 알게 된다. 이를 구현하기 위해서는도시의 역사적 현장에 현재의 모습과 과거의 모습을 중첩시켜 보여 줄 수 있는여러 가지 실천적 방법들이 필요하며, 그 중 하나로 증강현실기술이 주목을 받고 있다.

Overlapping Image is to overlap two images of a location from different time. In particular to make historical events sustainable memories, past and present of the city meet, which create an epic and become more meaningful through image synthesis. What is necessary for this is imagination. Imagination enables the dialectical image to glow. Past and present should meet constantly to emit flashes and show the constellation in order to allow history that creates the identity of city to be meaningful in the present. The trace and meaning of historical event that happened in the City of Gwangju in May, 1980 are fading away because of the development of the city and indifference due to increase of the generation who hasn’t experienced that historical event. We get to know that past and present are not separated but connected, bringing up the memories that is impregnated all over the city through synthesizing past and present to enable past history of the city to be meaningful in the present. Several practical methods that can show synthesizing past and present of historical site all over the city are necessary in order to implement this, and augmented reality technologies are getting attention as one of them.
