<세 얼간이>가 보여주는 대학 문제

The Problem of University Revealed in the Film <3 idiots>

대학의 위기라고들 한다. 위기에 처했을 때 가장 바람직한 일은 자신을 되돌아보는 일이다. 그리고 영화에서 제기된 문제들이 사회적 공감과 반향을 불러일으킬 경우 이를 바탕으로 그 해결책을 모색하는 것은 효과적인 방법이 될 수 있다. 본 연구는, 학생과 교수 그리고 이들의 가족이 모두 등장하여, 대학 입학에서부터 대학 생활, 그리고 졸업과 졸업 이후에 느끼는 생활을 총체적으로 보여주는 ‘대학 영화’인 <세 얼간이>(라지쿠마르 히라니, 2009)를 통해서 ‘대학이란 무엇인가’라는 질문을 던지고 답을 찾고자하는 시도이다. 본 논문에서는 <세 얼간이>를 텍스트로 하여, 대학에서의 교육, 대학과 학문, 대학에서의 교수-학생의 관계, 대학에서의 학생-학생 관계, 대학에서의 학습 그리고 대학에서 추구하는 지식 등이 영화 속에서 어떻게 투영되고 있는지를 파악하고, 이를 토대로 대학 문제 해결을 위한 한 단초를 구하고자 했다. <세 얼간이>는 주요 인물들의 행동과 그들의 관계가 빚어내는 한편의 ‘코미디’를 통해서 우리에게 대학의 본래 모습으로 되돌아가도록 강력하게 추동하고 있는 것으로 보인다.

As everyone knows, the crisis of university is a very serious matter. In a crisis, it’s most desirable to turn to himself and study his own failings. Because the film is one of the most influential forms of media, debating and trying to find a solution for the problem raised in a film can be a very effective method. This study is an attempt to ask the question - “what is university?” and find the answer in <3 Idiots>(2009) directed by Rajkumar Hirani. As one of the impressive ‘college film’, the movie was a box office and critical success. This film looks at our educational system which pressurizes the students and does not allow to chose his destination by his own wish, in a comic and satirical way and exposes some of the flaws in it. It seems to challenge strongly our current values on education and success - that we should learn for the sake of learning but not for grades or what others want us to do.
