할리우드 SF영화의 이미지텔링에 사용된 알레고리 연구

A Study of allegory being used in imagetelling of Hollywood Science Fiction Films: an analysis of main scenes of <Blade Runner> and <Minority Report> with the perspective of visual culture

본 고는 비주얼콘텐츠 연구로서의 영화 연구라는 방법론적 지평을 넓히고자하는 의도에서 기획되었다. 먼저 비주얼 장면 이미지텔링이라는 개념을 중심으로 회화 알레고리 접근방법과 문화연구의 이데올로기적 접근방법을 재구성하여 분석 프레임을 마련하였다. 그리고 이를 이용하여 미국 할리우드의 SF 영화들에서 사용되는 알레고리 기법을 검토한다. 분석의 예로서는 <블레이드 러너>와 <마이너리티 리포트>를 사용하였다. 일반적으로 작품성 높은 SF 영화는 현 사회 상황을 여러 방식으로 반영하면서 때로는 강도 높은 비판을 하기도 한다. 상상력을 이용하여 다양한 정치ㆍ사회ㆍ철학적 주제들을 조합하여 관객들에게 보여주고 있다. 따라서 비주얼 이미지가 관객에게 호소하는 바는 다른 장르의 영화에 비해 훨씬 더 크다고 볼수 있다. 그런 탓에 훌륭한 SF 영화의 경우, 장면의 이미지텔링이 차지하고 있는 비율은 상당할 수밖에 없다. 회화적 알레고리, 이데올로기의 시각에서 보자면, 영화 속의 주요 장면 이미지들은 인문ㆍ사회학적 주제들과 맞닿아 있다. 이러한내막 때문에 관객들은 SF 영화를 보면서 시각적으로 강하게 실감하고 감동받을 수 있게 되는 것이다.

The aim of this study was to broaden the methodological horizon of film studies as part of visual contents studies. An analytical framework was established by the allegory of visual art with “visual scene imagetelling” as a focal concept. Using this framework, moreover, some major allegorical techniques that are frequently used in SF films of Hollywood were examined. For the example of this analysis, I use <Blade Runner> and <Minority Report>. Good SF films often make severe criticisms of the present world by reflecting many aspects of it in imagined societies. Diverse political, social, and philosophical themes are combined using imagination and are shown to the audience. Thus the appeal of visual images on the audience is more salient in SF films than in films of other genres. The ratio of scene imagetelling in the film is therefore significantly high in good SF films. From the perspective of visual allegory and ideology, the images of the major scenes reveal themes of the human and the social sciences. Because of this, the audience visually experience the meaning of the film and be touched by it.
