들뢰즈/가타리의 기계와 추상기계 개념을 활용한 웃음의 재조명

Interpretation of Laugh Using the Concepts of Machine and Abstract Machine from Deleuze and Gattari

웃음의 본질과 원리를 다루는 담론의 핵심 논제는 ‘웃음을 일으키는 동인은 무엇인가?’하는 문제로 수렴된다. 하지만 웃음의 양상은 너무나 다양하여 웃음의 문제를 총체적으로 다룰 수 있는 담론은 부재한다. 본 논문은 웃음의 동인을 밝히고자 하는 기존의 이론들이 가진 지엽적인 한계를 확장해 보고자 기획되었다. 웃음의 특성상 들뢰즈와 가타리가 창안한 기계와 추상기계의 개념을 활용한다면 보다 원초적인 차원에서 웃음의 원리를 파악할 수 있으리라는 판단에 따라 웃음의 추상기계를 도출해 보았다. 웃음에는 자연발생적인 웃음과 그렇지 않은 웃음, 즉 인위적인 억지웃음이 있다. 본 논문에서 도출한 웃음의 추상기계는 적어도 자연발생적인 웃음에 대하여 보편적 유효성을 갖는 웃음의 메커니즘을 나타내는 다이어그램이다. 문화예술 분야에서 이슈가 되는 웃음은 주로 자연발생적인 웃음이다. 뿐만 아니라 최근 들어 각광받는 힐링의 웃음도 자연발생적인 웃음이다. 따라서 본 논문에서 도출한 웃음의 추상기계는 문화예술 분야의 웃음 현상을 사유하고 분석하는 데 유용한 도구가 되리라 기대한다.

The major issue of the theory related to the laugh is focused on a question: What is the mechanism of laughing? However, it’s true that it’s not possible to figure out a general theory that is competent to explain every single case of laughing. It’s due to the extreme variety of the phenomena of laughing. This study was motivated by the expectation that we could find out a mechanism covering more cases of laughing than any other theory has been doing, by using the concepts of machine and abstract machine from Deleuze and Guattari. Laughing is divided in two categories: the spontaneous and the factitious. Owing to the concept of abstract machine, this study has succeeded in figuring out the mechanism operating in all kinds of spontaneous laughing. The main issue in the field of culture and arts is spontaneous laughing, not factitious laughing. The abstract machine of laughing drawn through this study would be an effective tool to explore and analyse the phenomena of spontaneous laughing in the cultural and artistic field.
