어린이 학습만화에 나타난 아프리카에 대한 서술의 변화 양상 (2002 ~ 2013)

Variations in descriptions of Africa in children’s educational comics

본 연구는 아동학습만화에서 아프리카에 대한 서술이 어떻게 변화해 왔는지 밝히는 것을 목표로 한다. 연구는 아프리카를 중심 주제로 다룬 아동학습만화 중에서 2002년 이후 출간되어 2013년 현재도 시판되고 있는 8종을 대상으로 하였다. 선행연구에 대한 검토를 통해, 우리 사회가 다양한 매체를 통해 반복적으로 재생산하고 있는 아프리카에 대한 편견은 자연환경, 문화ㆍ역사, 경제ㆍ구호, 아프리카인이라는 4개 영역으로 구분지을 수 있음을 확인하였다. 이 영역에 따라 서술내용을 1차 분석한 결과, 모든 학습만화에 공통적으로 비중있게 다루어지고 있는 내용으로 야생 동물의 천국, 식민지 역사, 이집트 문명, 가난과 풍부한 자원, 인종과 피부색이라는 주제를 추출하였으며, 이를 서술하는 관점은 2010년을 기점으로 하여 달라지고 있음을 확인하였다. 이에 따라 우리는 2010년을 전후하여 이 공통 주제에 대한 서술이 어떻게 구체적으로 변화하였는지를 분석하였다. 그 결과, 초기 학습만화에서는 제국주의 시대에 서구에 의해 만들어진 아프리카에 대한 이미지가 여과없이 그대로 소개되는 데 반해, 2010년 이후의 학습만화는 아프리카의 역사적 문화적 맥락에 근거하여 오늘날의 문제점을 구체적으로 설명하고 있으며, 무기력한 모습이 아니라 오랜 역사와 독자적 문명을 가진 주체로서 아프리카인을 보여주는 방향으로 서술이 변화하였음을 확인하였다. 한ㆍ아프리카 관계의 미래 지향적 발전을 위해서는 문화적 상호 이해가 가장 중요한 기반을 이룬다는 점에서, 어린이들의 인지 형성에 큰 영향을 주는 학습만화의 이러한 변화는 긍정적이라고 평가할 수 있을 것이다.

Africa have changed in children’s educational comics, with Africa as the central theme, published from 2002 to 2013. In previous studies, four main categories depicting Africa were identified: The natural environment, cultures and history, economy and aid, and the image of African people. Commonly occurring images in educational comics were then analyzed and examined. The ways in which descriptions of Africa differed before and after 2010 were also identified. The way in which educational comics depicted images of Africa prior to 2010 tended to be fragmented and dominated by Western perspectives. Before 2010, Africa was typically illustrated as a paradise of animals. Comics routinely overstated European colonization and Egyptian civilization. In addition, it was always represented as undeveloped, giving no background facts, and in a way that depicted only the physical features of the African people. However, after 2010, these portrayals changed, signaling an era of more objective and constructive descriptions. This research shows how educational comics depicting Africa have changed since 2010. The prejudiced perspectives of Africa may affect children’s cognitive formation, implant distorted images, and lead to social stereotyping. Therefore, to ensure future generations are afforded an objective perspective, educational comics should show a balanced view of African cultures. For this reason, the variations in descriptions of Africa in educational comics can be interpreted as positive.
