무라카미 하루키의 소설에는 음악이 자주 등장한다. 음악가의 이름만 나오기도 하고, 작곡가(연주가)의 음악(연주)이(가) 중요한 역할을 하기도 한다. 하루키의 단편 소설은 장편 소설을 위한 출발점이다. 단편 소설 속에는 장편 소설과 마찬가지로 여러 음악이 등장하고, 각 음악은 작품마다 고유 기능을 담당한다. 다만 장편 소설과는 달리 음악이 항상 등장하지 않고, 작품마다 곡수의차이가 크며, 대부분 곡수가 적은 편이고, 장르와 기능 또한 단순하며, 한 작품에서 반복 등장하여 중요한 기능을 발휘하는 경우가 드물다. 그러나 단편 소설이 밑바탕이 되어 장편 소설로 확장되었듯이, 음악의 확장을 통한 기능의 다양성과 복합성은 장편 소설의 독창성과 작품성에 크게 기여하였다. 하루키의 장편 소설(총 13편) 속에 나오는 음악(총 305곡) 중 곡수와 비중이 큰 장르는 클래식(98곡, 32.13%), 록(65곡, 21.31%), 재즈(55곡, 18.03%), 팝(20곡, 6.56%), 포크(18곡, 5.90%) 등의 순으로 나타났다. 하루키의 장편 들을 분석하면, 소설 속의 음악들은 ▲영감의 원천 ▲배경음악의 효과 ▲산문의 한계 극복 ▲내면세계의 표현 ▲공감의 도구 ▲주제의 연결고리 등의 6가지 보편 기능이 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 각각의 음악은 거의복수의 기능을 하지만, 주된 기능을 통하여 하루키와 독자와의 공감대 형성에기여하는 것으로 인식된다. 하루키가 소설 속에 음악을 등장시키는 의도를 정확히 이해하기는 어렵지만, 소설 속 음악의 기능들을 통하여 인식하면 음악성이 짙은 하루키의 문학 세계에 근접할 수 있다.a

Haruki s short stories serve as the starting point for his novels. In his short stories, as in his novels, various music appears and each music serves its own function in each story. Unlike in novels, however, music does not always appear; the number of music differs in each novel; mostly, the number of music tends to be small; the genre and function of music is simple; and it is rare that music appears repeatedly in one story and plays an important role. However, since novels are written based on short stories, the increased role of music and the consequent diversification and complexity of its function greatly contributed to the uniqueness and literary value of novels. In Haruki s novels, music in the novels serves six major functions:1) the source of inspiration; 2) the effect as the background music;3) overcoming limitations of prose; 4) expression of the inner world; 5) tools for sympathy; 6) link for theme. In most cases, each song serves multiple functions, but it also plays a certain major role,thereby building bond of sympathy between Haruki and readers. It is hard to find the exact reason that Haruki makes music appear in his novels.
