존슨(Ben Jonson) 영문법서(1640)의 영문법사적 의의에 관한 연구

A Study of Ben Jonson’s Grammar (1640) and Its Status

  • 17

The present study elucidates the grammatical systems and descriptions of Jonson’s English Grammar(1640) in the context of the contemporary awareness of an emerging need for grammar to standardize spoken English usage. Then, based on these considerations, this study shows that, for the first time in the history of English grammar writing, his grammar treats only spoken English as the subject of study, offers a significant insight into Jacobean English, and includes syntax and syntactic punctuation within the scope of grammar apart from morphology, illustrating syntactic rules with literary quotations from English writers. Thus, his grammar, as a reflection of the zeitgeist of the early 17th century, is to be regarded as the most up-to-date vernacular standard in the early English grammars.
