Purpose– This study analyzed the effect of interpersonal exchanges between Southeast Region in Korea and ASEAN countries on outward FDI and exports of the Southeast Region. Design/methodology/approach– This study analyzed outward FDI and exports of the Southeast Region in Korea toward ASEAN 8 countries except Brunei and Laos for the period covering 2008 to 2018. Two interpersonal exchange variables were used, namely, number of ASEAN nationalities registered in the Southeast Region in Korea (DGEX1₁) and ASEAN nationalities entering Korea (DGEX₂). The fixed-effects panel regression model was utilized as an empirical test. Panel unit root and cointegration tests were conducted in order to avoid spurious regression of non-stationary panel data. Findings–DGEX1₁ has had a positive effect on FDI and exports of the Southeast Region toward ASEAN nations. DGEX₂ is statistically insignificant with respective to FDI and exports of the Southeast Region in Korea toward the ASEAN. Research implications or Originality– Local governments of the Southeast Region in Korea should make an effort to attract more ASEAN nationalities come to the region as registered foreigners.
