Infrastructure and Application Model for Effective Utilization of Cloud Computing in Small and Medium Enterprises

Cloud computing is a kind of innovative business model with new technologies such as broadband network, Service-as-a-Service (SaaS) and virtualization, which works as services of on-demand policy by supplying customers with storage resources and computing. These services were enlarged by infrastructure setup and furthermore persistent IT management of resources. Recent interest in cloud computing is to offer new applications requiring higher level of computing resources and flexible scalability. Survey performed by Gartner Group in 2009 shows that cloud computing is utilized more in finance and business fields than any other fields. The paper suggests requirements, infrastructure model and application model for effective utilization of cloud computing in the small and medium enterprises (SME). There are advantages by utilizing cloud computing in SME, as follows. Firstly, utilizing information services based on cloud computing in SME enables the enterprise to be equipped with high level of information system without burdening initial high investment cost and without worrying about compatibility problem of the previous computing facilities. In the past, SME had difficulties of decision making in purchase of information systems, since SME should pay quite a lot of initial investment cost for computing facilities and IT staff. Secondly, adopting cloud computing in SME eliminates disaster recovery risk and its high cost. Thirdly, adopting cloud computing in SME makes it possible to prepare for new tools and applications for improving IT capabilities in SME. Fourthly, adopting cloud computing in SME can choose the subscription fees based on the level of services, number of users and features of the enterprise. Fifthly, adopting cloud computing in SME can provide the enterprise with the prompt information services on demand, since the cloud providers have implemented development of administration process, application and database management system etc.
