Recently, air pollution from the marine ports has become a serious issue all over the world. On 1st January 2020, the international Maritime Organization(IMO) will implement a new regulation for a 0.5% global sulphur cap for marine fuels. Under the new global cap, ships will have to use marine fuels with a sulphur content of no more than 0.5%S against the current limit of 3.5%S in an effort to reduce the amount of sulphur oxide. The Emission Control Areas(ECAs) will remain at the 2015 standard of 0.1%S content. LNG is proposed as a low-carbon clean fuel for marine transport in port areas. A new report recently concluded that Japan has the potential to become a major international LNG bunkering hub, and a key place for East Asia and North America bound trade vessels to refuel. The purpose of this paper is to present isses concerning the air pollution management in Japanese ports and to provide solutions to help the policy makers and port operators maintain a green environmenta port in Korea. This research provides the current pollution status and contributes guidelines for the direction of future policy.
