한서 선생이 계몽교육 활동 중 가사를 쓰고 작곡하여 남긴 애국적인 창가들은 ‘삼천리 반도 금수강산 일하러가세’, ‘놀이동요 무궁화 꽃이 피었습니다’, ‘모곡학교교가’, ‘기러기노래’, ‘조선의 노래’, ‘조선지리가’, ‘운동가’, ‘시절 잃은 나비’, ‘무궁화동산’, ‘조선의 꽃’으로 모두 10곡이다. 선생께서 남긴 주옥같은 이 노래들을 살펴보면 우리에게 주는 하나의 메시지가 있는데 그것은 다름 아닌 ‘홍익인간(弘益人間)’이다. 그 홍익인간을 다시 풀어 이야기하면 ‘사랑’이 될 것이다. 나라에 대한 사랑, 겨레에 대한 사랑, 이웃에 대한 사랑, 그리고 자기자신에 대한 사랑이 깊어져서 마침내 널리 사람을 이롭게 하는 것, 그것이 한서 선생이 우리에게 남김 메시지이다. 한서는 조선을 사랑했고, 백성을 사랑했으며, 조선의 산과 강, 하늘과 땅을 사랑했다. 위로는 하나님을 사랑했고 아래로는 백성을 사랑했다. 그 하나의 마음을 가지고 개화기에 풍전등화(風前燈火)와 같은 나라를 지키고자 관료로 언론인으로 계몽 구국운동가로 활동하고, 일제강점기에 교육가로 사회운동가로 시인으로 작곡가로 애국 가사를 보급하며 한글 서체를 창안하는 등 폭이 넓고도 다양하게 수많은 일을 했던 것이다.
A total of ten pieces of patriotic poems with singing, written and composed by Hanseo during his enlightenment period, still remains: Let’s go working toward the whole land of Joseon with beautiful scenery, Children’s playing song—The roses of Sharon have blossomed, The song of Mogok School, The song of wild goose, The song of Joseon, The song of Joseon’s geography, The song of independence movement, The butterflies deprived of their days, The beautiful land of Joseon, and The flower of Joseon. These gems of poems with singing give us one message, that is, humanitarianism. It can also be explained as love. The love for the nation, for people, for his neighbors and for himself became deeper and finally became the humanitarian ideal. That is the message Hanseo leaves for us. He loved Joseon, his fellow countrymen, the scenery of Joseon, and heaven and earth of Joseon. He loved all from God to people. With this sole mind, he acted as a bureaucrat, a journalist and a man of enlightenment movement to defend our country in danger during the time of enlightenment, and as an educator, a man of social movement, a poet and a composer to distribute the patriotic poems with singing and to devise Hangeul fonts during Japanese colonial era, working in various fields of activity.
