근대 해항도시 신의주의 산업구성

The Industrial Structure of the Seaport City Sinuiju in Modern Times

본고는 근대 신의주의 주요 산업이었던 교통업, 공업, 무역의 분석을 통해 도 시 신의주 성격을 확인하고, 신의주를 매개로 전개되던 당시 동북아시아 관계를 고찰한 것이다. 고찰의 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 신의주의 산업에서 두드러지던 특성 중 하나는 매개성이었다. 신의주는 바다, 강, 국경에 연한 지리적 조건을 바 탕으로, 배후지(압록강 유역 및 경의선 연선 지역을 비롯한 평안북도 일대)-신의 주-역외 지역(조선, 만주, 일본) 간의 산업경제를 매개하는 과정에서 근대적 산업구조를 구축했다. 2. 신의주의 산업은 기반, 구성, 전개 방식에서 일본 제국주의와 불가분의 관계를 맺고 있었다. 산업 기반이 되었던 교통망의 구축, 무역 활성화를 위한 관세와 운임 정책, 식민지 정부의 자본 유치책 등은 신의주 내 일본 관민 자본의 부식(扶植)과 일본 제국주의 세력권의 확장을 목적으로 진행되었 다. 신의주의 산업은 이와 같은 기반을 바탕으로 일본 자본이 주요 산업을 장악하고 역내외 지역에 생산･유통망을 확장하며 세력화하는 가운데 전개되었다. 3. 신의주 산업의 매개성과 식민지성은 산업화의 동력이었던 동시에, 발전을 제약하는 취약지점이기도 했다. 신의주의 산업화를 추동하던 매개성은 신의주가 가진 물리적 조건들 위에 일본 제국주의의 작용이 더해지며 성립할 수 있었다. 신의주의 산업은 그 근간에 위치하는 식민지성으로 인해 일본 제국주의 세력권을 넘어 독자적인 영역을 확보하는 확장성에서 한계를 보였고, ‘만주국’의 수립 이후 일본-조선-만주를 잇는 블록경제화 과정에서 매개적 역할을 강화하며 일본 제국주의 경제에 대한 종속성을 심화하고 있었다

This study set out to analyze the industrial structure of Sinuiju and its characteristics in the former half of the 20th century. The analysis results confirmed the followings: the industrial structure of Sinuiju focused on transportation, industry, and trade, which were formed and developed at a mediating position between hinterland and the empire s sphere of influence rather than being completed within a city. Based on geographical conditions, Sinuiju has established a modern industrial structure in the process of mediating the industry between hinterland and Sinuiju and offshore areas. The industry in Sinuiju had an inseparable relationship with Japanese imperialism. The establishment of transportation networks, and tariff and freight policies were carried out with the aim of expanding Japanese imperialism powers. Based on this foundation, the Sinuiju industry was developed as Japanese capital took control of major industries and expanded production and distribution networks. In that process, Sinuiju played the role to subordinate hinterland to the empire s sphere of influence as the supplier of raw materials and the market of products. The expansion of Japanese imperialism was not consistent under the same policy, but it developed in the middle of complex competition and collaboration relations among the colonial cities-Sinuiju and Andong. In short, the expansion of Japanese imperialism developed in a pattern of Japan, Korea(Sinuiju), and Manchuria(Andong) being connected in competition and cooperation relations and expanding to the Northeast Asia.
