근대 동북아해역의 이주 현상에 대한 미시적 접근

A Microscopic Approach to Migration in the Modern Northeast Asian Sea Region : Focusing on Bugwan Ferry

본 연구에서는 부관연락선을 통한 한인과 일본인의 이동에 주목하여 근대 동북아해 역에 있어서의 이주 현상에 대하여 미시적 접근을 시도했다. 바꾸어 말하자면 부관연락 선을 타고 대한해협을 건너 이동한 한인과 일본인의 이주 경험에 주목하여 부관연락선 이 이들에게 어떠한 공간이었는지, 그리고 그곳에서는 어떠한 이벤트들이 있었는지를 밝히고자 했다. 본 연구에서는 근대 시기 한인과 일본인의 이주 양상이 그 동기, 형태, 결 과에 있어서 큰 차이를 보인다는 점을 감안하여 이주 경험에 대한 분석 또한 ‘민족’의 경 계에 따라 나누어 살펴보았다. 우선 한인의 경우, 강제동원 이전과 이후로 부관연락선을 통한 이동의 경험은 크게 달라짐을 알 수 있었다. 1930년대 전반까지 부관연락선은 승선 자체가 어렵지만 삶을 이어나가기 위해서는 반드시 올라타야만 하는 대상이었으며 혼란 속에 이루어진 이동은 고됨, 절박함과 더불어 희망, 설렘이 뒤섞인 것이었다. 한편, 1930 년대 후반 이후가 되면 부관연락선을 통한 ‘강제적인’ 이동은 생사를 가로지르고 폭력이 난무하는 보다 가혹한 것으로 바뀌게 된다. 다음으로 일본인의 경우 부관연락선의 이주 경험은 양면성을 지니고 있었다. 일반적으로 부관연락선을 통한 이동은 무엇보다 제국 의 최신식 기선의 체험을 의미했지만 이와 더불어 삶의 개척과 좌절을 동시에 경험할 수 도 있었다. 부관연락선은 일본인 이주자를 기회의 땅과 연결시켜주는 역할을 하기도 했 지만 다양한 이유에서 스스로 삶의 마지막을 선택하는 사람들을 위한 수단이기도 했다. 이처럼 부관연락선을 통한 이동은 그 자체로도 다양한 의미와 감정이 교차하는 것이었고 특히 한인과 일본인이라는 민족의 ‘경계’가 주는 특징은 분명했다. 그리고 이와 같은 작업은 기존에 거시적 분석을 중심으로 이루어져 온 부관연락선 연구가 지니는 한계를 보완하고 관련 연구의 종합성을 높인다는 의의가 있다.

This study attempted a microscopic approach to the migration phenomenon in the modern Northeast Asian sea region by focusing on the movement of Koreans and Japanese through Bugwan Ferry. In other words, by focusing on the experience of Korean and Japanese migrants across the Korea Strait on the Bugwan Ferry, this study wanted to find out what kind of space the Bugwan Ferry was and what events there were. In this study, the analysis of the migration experience was also divided according to the boundaries of ethnicity in consideration of the fact that the migration patterns of Korean and Japanese during the modern period differed greatly in their motivation, form and outcome. First of all, in the case of Koreans, it was found that the experience of migration through the Bugwan Ferry before and after forced mobilization varies greatly. Until the first half of the 1930s, the Bugwan Ferry was an object that was difficult to get on, but had to be boarded to continue life, and the movement in chaos was a mixture of hardship, desperation, expectation and prospect. Meanwhile, by the late 1930s and beyond, forced movements through the Bugwan Ferry turned into harsher ones that cross life and death and abound with violence. Next, in the case of the Japanese, the migration experience by the Bugwan Ferry was double-sided and ambivalent. In general, the movement through the Bugwan Ferry meant, first of all, the experience of the Japanese Empire s newest steamer, but at the same time, it was also possible to experience the pioneering and frustration of life at the same time. The Bugwan Ferry served as a link between Japanese migrants and the land of opportunity, but it was also a means for those who chose their own end of life for various reasons. Like this migration through the Bugwan Ferry itself was a cross of various meanings and emotions, and the characteristics given by the ‘boundary’ of the Korean and Japanese people were clear. And this kind of study has significance in that it complements the limitations of the earlier researches on the Bugwan Ferry, which has been focused on macro-analysis, and enhances the comprehensiveness of related researches.
