OTT 드라마 <킹덤>의 서사 전략 연구

A Study on the Narrative Strategy of OTT Drama “Kingdom”: Focused on the Theory of Remediation

연극으로 출발한 드라마는 영화와 텔레비전 드라마 그리고 OTT 드라마로 재탄생하였다. 기술의 발달로 거듭난 드라마는 이야기하기라는 본연의 성질을 유지하지만, 미디어 특성에 따라 형식과 내용을 개조하는 특징을 지닌다. 이에 본 연구는 재매개 이론을 통해 OTT 서비스 드라마의 서사 전략을 확인하였다. 재매개 이론은 뉴미디어가 기존 미디어의 속성을 자기의 것으로 해서 그 형식과 내용을 만든다는 것이다. 따라서 본 연구는 텔레비전 드라마를 OTT 드라마의 기존 미디어로 설정하고 어떠한 차이점을 지니는지 도출하였다. 이때 텔레비전 드라마는 매체의 특성상 분산집중 몰입성과 연속성 그리고 일상성을 특징으로 한다. 연구 결과, 드라마 <킹덤>은 추리 서사 구조를 차용하여 서스펜스를 극대화함으로써 몰입성을 최대치로 끌어올렸다. 또 서스펜스의 극대화는 좀비 출현, 조학주의 추격 등 폭력성과 선정성을 통해서도 이루어졌다. 또 서사의 연속성은 추리 서사를 통한 서사 배경의 이동과 새로운 인물 출현을 통해서 확보되었다. 그리고 드라마 <킹덤>은 담화적인 측면에서 텔레비전 드라마의 일상성에서 벗어났음을 확인하였다. 이는 좀비를 드라마의 소재로 하고 있고, 폭력적이고 선정적이란 것에서 그러하다. 더불어 <킹덤>은 플래시백을 이용한 과거 소환이나 정지화면의 엔딩 컷을 사용하지 않는 등 관습적인 텔레비전의 영상기법을 차용하지 않는 것이 확인되었다. 이를 통해서 <킹덤>의 서사 전략은 이야기 차원에서는 기존의 텔레비전 드라마의 서사 전략을 차용하지만 담화 차원에서는 변주되었음을 확인하였다.

The drama that started as a play was reborn as a movie, television drama, and OTT drama. Dramas reborn through the development of technology retain the nature of storytelling, but have the characteristic of remodeling form and content according to media characteristics. Therefore, this study confirmed the narrative strategy of the drama of the OTT service through the remediation theory. The theory of remediation is that the new media makes its form and content by using the properties of the existing media as its own. Therefore, this study set the TV drama as the existing media of the OTT drama and derived the differences between OTT dramas and television dramas. At this time, the TV drama is characterized by distributed concentration, immersion, continuity, and everydayness due to the characteristics of the medium. As a result of the study, the drama “Kingdom” maximized the suspense by borrowing the structure of mystery narrative, raising the immersion to the maximum. The maximization of suspense was also achieved through violence and sensibility, such as the appearance of zombies and pursuit of pedagogy. In addition, the continuity of narrative was secured through the movement of narrative background through mystery narrative and the appearance of new characters. Also, it was confirmed that the drama “Kingdom” deviated from the everydayness of a television drama in terms of discourse. This is because zombies are the subject of drama, and they are violent and sensational. In addition, it was confirmed that “Kingdom” does not borrow conventional television imaging techniques, such as past summoning using flashback or not using the ending cut of still images. Through this, it was confirmed that the narrative strategy of “Kingdom” borrowed the narrative strategy of the existing television drama at the story level, but changed at the discourse level.
