Analysis of Structural Factors in the Trade Imbalance of the Part Material among Japan, China and Korea

This paper based on an analysis of the Asian International Input-Output Table(2000, 2005, 2010, 2013), focuses on analyzing the structural factors in the trade imbalance among Japan, China and Korea. Considering the industrial structures of the three countries and the structure of the trade between them, special attention was paid to the Part Material industry. In particular, we measured the international technological specialization (ITS) index among Japan, China and Korea, which provided a foundation for studying the structure of Korea’s heavy dependence on Japan’s Part Material industry and China’s also heavy dependence on Korea’s Part Material industry. The empirical results showed that Korea still depends quite heavily on imported the part material industry from Japan. The results also showed clearly that Japan is gradually becoming more dependent on Korean and Chinese the part material industry. This implies that the technology gap among Japan, China and Korea has gradually narrowed throughout the sample period.
