Changes in Production Technology Structure of Intermediate Products among Japan, China and Korea

This study aims to provide a quantitative overview of the industrial interdependence between Korea, China and Japan, three major economies in Northeast Asia. Specifically, the study adopted an international inputoutput framework to quantitatively measure the international interdependence between the three economies. Empirical analysis was carried out by determining the dominant relationship in the production technology structures of the three countries using import coefficients and production inducement coefficients. The fact that the industrial linkage between Korea-China and China-Japan is more deeply interdependent and highly competitive, compared with the Korea-Japan linkage. Finally, the industrial linkage in the electronics industry between Korea, China and Japan was found to be significantly tight, which implies that the three countries interdependence in the industry has been deepening, and that China is rapidly upgrading its industrial structure and catching up with Korea and Japan.
