The purpose of this study is to examine present and future developments of credit sharing information system in China from the perspective of currently fashionable law and finance theory. China offers an interesting case study in investigating the relationship between legal tradition and creditor rights, which, in turn determines the relationship between legal institutions and financial development. This paper supports the view that creditor rights and public credit registries can be substitutes, and that public and private credit registries might be substitutes as well at this stage of financial development in China. Furthermore, this study attempts to figure out which factors underlie China s recent development of financial infrastructure, providing another dimension for the explanation of finance-growth nexus. Credit information sharing system, which is an essential part of financial infrastructure, develops as consumer credit begins to expand in a significant degree. Public credit registries appear to be more probable alternatives in countries with less efficient judicial systems.
