한·중·일 FTA 경제효과와 추진 여건 분석

Economic Effects of a CJK FTA and Assessment of the Environment for the Trilateral FTA

In November 1999, the three countries, of China, Japan and Korea (CJK), made an official attempt to discuss a CJK FTA during a trilateral summit meeting in Manila. In November 2001, more issues for strengthening economic cooperation in the region were raised at the trilateral summit meeting in Brunei. Through this process, the three countries finally were able to mark the first steps toward trilateral economic cooperation and integration. One year later, Chinese minister Zhu Rongji proposed the review of a trilateral FTA during the summit meeting in Phnom Penh, November 2002. Such an FTA will bring about massive macroeconomic benefits for all its members in terms of GDP, production, and economic welfare. The significance of a CJK FTA will be highlighted not only in terms of member countries’ national interests, but also in terms of regional integration. This paper discusses the economic gains from the FTA and review the feasibility of a trilateral FTA in the Northeast Asia. Also, the paper underlines that China can be the country leading economic integration in East Asia, and possibly the ASEAN-China FTA can be a FTA hub in the region.
