『순자』 속 성인(聖人)에서 성왕(聖王)으로

From Inner Sage to Outer King in Xunzi: Drawing Boundary between Governance and Self-Government

예상과 달리 『순자』에서는 성인(聖人)과 성왕(聖王)을 구분해서 사용하는 경우가 더 빈번히 나타난다. 물론 전국시대 말기에 개념정의와 분류방식이 더 발전되었기 때문이기도 하지만, 성인과 성왕을 구분해 사용한 것 역시 시대적 수요에 따른 해답이었을 수도 있다. 그것은 새로운 질서출현의 전조를 예단하고 새로운 군주를 기대하는 것이었다. 순자는 요·순으로 상징되는 전통적인 성인 개념을 그대로 계승하면서 동시에 성인을 정신의 생각하기를 통해 각성한 존재로서 삶의 합목적성을 인지한 합리적 행위자로 규정한 뒤, 학습되어 삶의 완성으로서 불멸성을 획득하는 실천적 행위자로 성왕을 제시했다. 기존 유가적 교의와 달리 통치자가 삶의 합목적성을 각성한 순간 최선의 선택을 기대할 수 있는 합리적 행위자가 된다는 순자의 전망은 보다 현실적이다. 이로부터 순자는 모두가 각성하여 자율적 인간으로 재탄생하는 순간 자신의 삶에 불멸성을 확보할 수 있는 자치의 지경에 이를 것으로 예견했던 것이다. 바로 그것이 전국시대를 마무리하는 역사단계에서 시대정신을 대표한 순자에게 부여된 책무이기도 했다.

Contrary to expectations, it is more apparent that Inner Sage is separated from Outer King in Xunzi. Of course, it is because conceptual falsification and classification methods were more developed at the end of Warring States era, but the use of the distinction between Inner Sage and Outer King may have also been the answer to the demand of the times. What was Xunzi s intention? It foresaw the dawn of a new order and expected a New Prince. Xunzi inherited the confucian tradition about Inner Sage-Outer King symbolized by Yao-Shun, while defining the role of Inner Sage as a rational actor who recognized the purpose of life as an awakening through the thinking of the mind, and presenting the Outer King as a practical actor who acquires immortality of life. Xunzi s expectation to become an actor who can expect rational choice at the time the existing ruler awakened the relevance of life is more realistic. Xunzi expected the point when everyone can wake up and be reborn as an autonomous human, thereby securing immortality in their lives. That was also the duty of Xunzi in the end of Warring States era.
