The Unruly Stranger Within Us - A Character Analysis of Bandhobi (2009)

본 연구는 신동일 감독의 독립장편영화 「반두비」(2009)의 서사와 인물에 대한 비평적 분석이다. 「반두비」는 방글라데시 출신 이주노동자 카림을 등장시켜 그로 하여금 한국사회의 이념적 기반들 즉, 인종주의, 가부장제, 기독교를 비판하게 함으로써 서구에서 만들어진 불법체류자 영화들의 서사관습과 구별된다. 서구영화가 이산자들을 무기력한 희생자로 묘사하는 것과 달리, 「반두비」는 이방인 인물을 한국적 사회문화 규범의 정당성과 안정성에 의문을 제기하는 적극적 행위자로 자리매김시킨다. 사회비평가로서 이방인의 역할은 또 다른 주변인이라 할 만한 여고생 민서와의 동행을 통해 그 동력을 확보한다. 극중 민서는 카림과의 대화자이자 그의 대변자 역할을 수행한다. 무엇보다 민서는 카림과의 관계를 통해 내적 변화를 경험한다. 본 연구는 민서의 내적 변화가 곧 영화 <반두비>가 관객들에게 호소하고자 하는 주제임을 분석한다.

This essay presents an analysis of the main characters of Bandhobi, an independent feature film directed by Shin Dong-il. The movie differs from most of the films on illegal migrants made in Western countries. One protagonist, Karim, a Bangladeshi worker staying in South Korea, challenges the host country’s ideological foundations such as racism, patriarchy, and Christianity. Unlike the conventional refugee films that portray displaced people as helpless victims, Bandhobi renders the outsider as an active dramatic player who questions the legitimacy and stability of the norms and beliefs upholding Korean society. The outsider gets empowered as a social commentator in accompanying with a high-school girl Min-seo, another marginalized figure from the mainstream society. Min-seo acts as both an interlocutor and a mouthpiece for Karim. She undergoes an inner transformation through a relationship with the foreign worker. This study suggests that the change of Min-seo informs what Bandhobi appeals to potential Korean audiences.
