1950년대 미국 대중문화에 등장한 ‘쿨’은 상징적 저항 행동으로, 내면화된 세속 초월의 자기 신념을 현시･소통하는 역설적 특성을 갖고 있다. 주로 백인 유명인들을 통해 나타난 ‘쿨’의 사적 태도는 서아프리카 제의 전통에서 유래했는데, 인종차별 속에서 자존감을 찾고자 했던 흑인들의 언어생활과 삶의 태도에 전이되었다. 아프리카적 ‘쿨’의 전인종적 대중성은 ‘비밥’의 직접성을 순화한 ‘쿨 스타일’이 백인음악가들에 의해 서부지역에 이식되면서 가능했다. 칸트의 미적 예술은 천재의 미적 이념을 소통하는 상징이자 합목적성의 표상방식이다. 칸트 예술철학의 관점에서 ‘쿨’ 재즈는 ‘비밥’의 첨예화된 자기표현 원리로부터 전후 미국의 모순을 극복하는 합목적적 미적 이념을 인종을 초월해 전개한 효과적이고 새로운 범형이었다.

‘Cool’ is an ironic personal attitude presenting ‘act of symbolic rebellion’, which displays and empathizes with the internalized otherworldly self-confidence. Appearing in 1950’s American popular culture, it was represented mainly by white celebrities and public figures, while originally transplanted from west-African Yoruban ritual tradition to African-American everyday argotic expression and life attitude. Cross-racial popularization of ‘cool’ was enabled through recipient of the refined straightforwardness of ‘bebop’ style by white jazz musicians to west coast. Beautiful art of Kant’s aesthetics is an empathic communication of aesthetical Ideas which exposed by genius as an exemplar of art, and those Ideas are the symbol of purposiveness and its way of representation. ‘Cool’ style was new and effective exemplar of representation of the aesthetic Idea in jazz music which overcome the absurdities of post-war era of America by purposiveness in cross-racial way.
