이 논문은 1923년에 행해진 아인슈타인의 노벨상 강연을 고전 수사학과 드라마티즘의 관점에서 분석한다. 고전 수사학을 따르면 착안, 배열, 표현, 전달에서 특징적인 언어 용법을 확인할 수 있으며, 드라마티즘의 5항목 방법을 따르면 행위자, 행위, 배경, 수단, 목적의 5가지 측면의 동기를 분석함으로써 강연자가 달성하고자 하는 수사적 의도가 무엇인가를 확인할 수 있다. 고전적 수사학의 관점에서 보면 이 강연은 인류의 지적 성취의 발자취를 정리하려는 의도로 그 구조와 표현 속에서 상대성이라는 개념의 발전 과정을 효과적으로 제시한다. 강연자는 스스로의 성과를 드러내지 않는 겸양의 에토스와, 수식 사용을 자제하며 첨단 물리학의 내용을 전달하려는 배려 속에 배태되는 안도감의 파토스 속에서, 일관된 철학적 사고를 통해 논리적으로 확장되어 가는 상대론의 로고스를 전달하고자 한다. 5항목 방법의 관점에서 보면 이 강연은 ‘행위자’로서 인간이 상대성이라는 개념을 ‘의미의 약정’을 ‘수단’으로 삼아 확장시키는 사고 ‘행위’에 초점이 맞추어져 있으며, 이 탐구적 사고 행위는 뉴턴과 마흐와 같은 선배들의 사고를 ‘배경’으로 삼아 탁월한 지적 성취를 이룩하는 고상한 ‘목적’을 달성하려는 것이었음을 전달한다.

This article analyzes by means of the classical rhetoric and dramatism Albert Einstein s Nobel lecture delivered in 1923. The classical rhetoric reveals the speaker s characteristic usages of language in inventio, dispositio, elocutio and actio. The analysis of dramatism finds rhetor s rhetorical intention in the speech by analyzing the motives in 5 aspects: agent, act, scene, agency, and purpose. According to the classical rhetoric, the lecture effectively presents the developing process of the idea of relativity in its structure and expressions in the intention of arranging human intellectual accomplishments. The lecturer tries to deliver the ethos of humility by hiding his own performance and the logos by logically expanding the relativity theory in coherent philosophical thinking in the pathos of easiness formed in the restricted use of mathematical formulae while delivering the content of a state-of-the-art physics. According to pentadic method, the lecture is focused on the act of thinking through which humans as agents expand the notion of relativity by the agency of stipulation of meaning. And it delivers that the act of investigative thinking is for the noble purpose of superb intellectual achievement in the scene of the thoughts of predecessors like Newton and Mach.
