로망-데시네, ‘종이위의 영화’를 지향했던 만화

Roman Dessiné, a Comic which sought to be “Cinema on Paper”

프랑스에서 ‘로망-데시네’라는 만화의 한 장르는 1947년부터 연애잡지의 등장과 함께 나타났다. 몇 백만부씩 팔리던 연애잡지의 대표적 장르로 4-5년간 전성기를 누리다 그 지위를 로망-포토에게 넘겨준 후 서서히 쇠퇴했고, 1969년 이후로 자취를 감췄다. 이 연구는 로망-데시네가 사라진 이유가 만화형식이 수행할 수 없는, 영화의 대체물로 기능하기를 요구받았기 때문이라는 가설에서 출발한다. 이를 논증하기 위해 우선 로망-데시네의 갑작스러운 등장과 내세웠던 목표 그리고 그 특성을 알아본다. 로망-데시네는 ‘종이위의 영화’를 지향했고, 등장인물에 대한 시각적 표현방식과 스토리의 스타일로 볼 때 사실상 독자들에게 할리우드 연애 멜로영화의 대체물로써 기능했다고 볼 수 있다. 로망-데시네의 이러한 역할은, 실제 사진을 기반으로 하는 로망-포토가 등장하자 로망-포토로 옮겨갔다. 사진이 지닌 핍진성이 시각적으로 영화와 더 가깝게 느껴졌기 때문이다. 1960년대 초에 이르면 연애잡지가 쇠락하며 장르로서의 로망-데시네와 로망-포토 역시 쇠락하게 된다. 로망-데시네는 사라진 반면, 로망-포토는 장르의 규칙에서 벗어나 사진을 활용하는 만화의 한 유형으로 자리 잡게 된다. 이 연구를 통해, 만화라는 표현형식에 적절하지 않은 목표를 추구한 결과를 파악하고, 현재 진행되고 있는 과도한 기술적 결합 시도에 대한 재고의 필요성을 제시했다.

The roman dessiné was a comic genre which first appeared in France with the birth of romance magazines, in 1947. As the main genre featured in romance magazines, the roman dessiné enjoyed the height of its popularity for 4-5 years, before starting to be gradually eclipsed by the roman-photo. This study will attempt to understand the disappearance of the roman dessiné as being mainly attributable to its pursuit of a goal which ultimately, was unfit and inappropriate for a comic genre: a desire to imitate cinema. This role of the roman-dessiné was later taken up by the roman-photo: photographs, on which the roman-photo based itself, had a more realistic outlook which felt closer to cinematic expression. In parallel, by the 1960s, most of the roles previously fulfilled by romance magazines began to be occupied by televisions, and both the roman-dessiné and the roman-photo naturally went declining as well. Through this study, we will be identifying and assessing the consequences of pursuing a goal which betrays the expression defining a genre; by so doing, we hope to bring attention to the need for reevaluating popular current efforts at excessive technical combinations between genres.
