Improving diversity and peacebuilding through Social Integration Programme: Korea Immigration and Integration Programme (KIIP)’s Participants Perspectives and their contribution to Korean Society

Marriage and labor immigration is one of the key demographic trends in Korea that provides insight for understanding cultural beliefs and attitudes deeply rooted in Korean traditions in relation to increasing diversity in the country. The number of long-term immigrants that continues to increase every year is become important issue as the number of people living in the country increases. Despite many challenges, marriage and labor immigrants in Korea seek out and benefit from various opportunities. Through the KIIP programme immigrants received Korean language training and culture education. The role of language training not only helps the adaptation process of immigrants in their new countries but also has a role in improving their economic status. This study was aims to see how immigrants adapt to university life, organization and contribute to the local social economy and the role of community in facilitating integration between Korean students and foreign students in creating a good society. This study findings that after joining the KIIP programme, immigrants especially long-term residents, experienced an increase in social status and they are being more active to local communities. Their bargaining position in local society have been increased compared to before they joined the program. The existence of a multicultural community has a positive impact in reducing conflicts that might occur in a multicultural society. Community also has a role in maintaining peace and building trust between peoples across cultures.
