The purpose of this paper is to check the validity of the flying geesetheory in the context of economic development process of East Asia. To accomplish this, we measure the revealed comparative advantage of major export commodities for ten countries in the region, and compare their rank correlation in a number of different setting. In general, the flying geese theory seems to explain the economic development of East Asia quite well, although some temporal changes do emerge: First, Hong Kong is lagging behind due to her re-exporting trade pattern and service-oriented industrial structure. Second, Malaysia is forging ahead of other ASEAN countries, while Indonesia appears to be the least advanced among the peer countries.
