China s Joining of the WTO and its Impact on Export Competitiveness of Korea and China

China s joining of the WTO will lead to the opening and enlargement of china s markets and thereby expected to enhance the competitiveness of Chinese firms and Chinese product in the world market. It is expected that Korea has an opportunity to increase export to china with the China s joining of the WTO. But at the same time there is an adverse effect of china s joining of the WTO to Korea in that the enhanced competitiveness of Chinese firms and the improvement in the quality of Chinese product will make an adverse effect on the Korean access to the Chinese markets. In addition, Korea will face fierce competition with China in the world markets outside China. It is also possible that China will try to reduce its trade deficit by enforcing such measures as anti-dumping and safeguard on Korean goods. Facing all these adverse effects, Korea should take the full advantage of opening of Chinese market resulting from China s joining of the WTO. This should be done by minimizing the adverse effect of competition with Chinese firms in the China and the world markets. On the other hand, Korea need to maintain corporative relationships with China to avoid unnecessary trade conflict and prepare proper means to overcome the possible import regulations of China.
